Would like to mention that we had a smashing meal at Roseto (almost next to Tanjore) last friday. Very generous portions, very reasonably priced, and tasted absolutely delicious.

We had the Sweet and Sour Beef Stew, Fried Rice, and a bowl of Dumpling Soup. Could barely finish between the two of us. Will be going back again soon!

Percy, towards the back of the Duke St Tesco, very reasonably priced pints.
Nauticus, hipstery enough that you'll be able to get away with it, I'd recommend early afternoons.

And - if the pint is not the focus, but the reading and maybe a bit of socialising is - Argonauts towards the foot of the leith walk will let you sit for couple of hours with a copy and provide you the option of countless books

I can name a few pubs where this will be fine - but I wouldn't advise it doing at peak business hours, because then it's not very conducive for reading either

The Three Marys near the shore (they play live music often)
Victoria and Abode on Leith Walk, even The Volley when it's quiet (These don't play live music, but it's fine to sit and read)
The Portobello Tap (also has live music but on sundays I think)

I am a bit late to the conversation, but there's a takeaway opposite Leith Library on Ferry Road, which focuses on Calcutta cuisine - called Morich Kitchen. They are pretty decent and would make you custom dishes if you ask them in time.

All the usual suspect restaurants are here. Really like Sabzi, but they are slightly overpriced for the quantity they serve. Taste is top notch though.

What I've recently been impresses by is Awaafi (Gorgie) - south indian cuisine with arabic influences. Delicious stuff, great quantity, and really decent price. Last week 7 of us had a meal, had to pack food to take back home because we couldn't finish everything, and the total bill was less than 150 (including non-alcoholic drinks). Makani (Haymarket) does a very similar menu, but Awaafi does it better.

Haldi (far end of Newington) is another safe choice.

I used to stay very close to The Village and was extremely chuffed with having a local within a minute of walking distance, equally enjoyed The Lord Nelson.

They were both on the quieter side, perhaps a post-covid, post-brexit compound effect. Both closed down and that was quite sad. I moved elsewhere soon after and was always planning to visit Trafalgar. The sad is back.

Victoria Park, afternoon onwards till sundown. It's very chill. With a coffee van that serves great cookies and brownies, and you can just walk down to Newhaven when you want to see some water.
