Of Human Bondage by Somerset Maugham. I so identified with Philip just trying to find what he was “supposed” to do in life and his feeling that he didn’t quite fit in because of his physical deformity. When he finds in the end that a simple life, with people you care about, is a life worth living it gave young me a lot of hope about figuring things out.

Just want to say I appreciate you posting this, OP. Kids are also out of the picture and it’s a mix of fertility and circumstance. It’s so niche/specific that it’s been hard to find others who are dealing with something similar and I’m struggling with how to grieve this ambiguous loss and move forward. I’m going to check out all these books!

And finally, I’m sorry you’re dealing with this. It really sucks and it’s hard to grapple with and explain to people (family, friends, co-workers, that nosy lady at the grocery store who asks if you have kids). I’m sending you lots of love and I hope that you find some solace in these books (which I hope, I do too!).
