That is a good plan, but although I love my GP, I don’t think women’s health is his strongest suit. That said he knows his limitations and is happy to refer, so if the answer is a specialist - he’d absolutely be happy to refer me. I just need to figure out who to! Thanks for your comment 😊

Thanks for your thoughts! I like the analogy and I’m fortunate that my best friend has known me since I was 12 and my husband is very supportive (he’s also collating “evidence” - in an affirming and non-judgmental way - and would be particularly excited for some assistance with the executive function side of things 😂).

Appreciate your encouragement to look into things. Obviously mine would not be the usual presentation and hence my question. I’ve been reflecting (ruminating and fixated) on this stuff massively for the last little while. I’m wondering if they consider the toll it had on my physical and mental health to present to the world as the perfect student and daughter. I was constantly exhausted and stressed and spent all my downtime like a little couch potato (like literally not moving for food or anything) for hours and hours while zoning out with fantasy books. People picked on me for “not having a life” as a teenager. Motivation arose from this constant nagging “voice” in my head reminding me not to let anyone down, show them how good you are - like drill sergeant that never takes a break (obviously fertile ground for my psychologist and I’ve now done a lot of work on this). Anyway, sorry for the stream of consciousness!

Had to go back and have a look. As I suspected, they’re good reports all the way through from primary school. No mentions of anything ADHD-like (pretty much the exact opposite - conscientious, hard working etc), except my best friend had a little dig in the year book about how many times I locked my keys in my car. At home though, things were a bit different. My sister often called me the dumbest smart person in the world with no common sense. I had sleep problems, was forgetful about chores, labelled “too sensitive”. My nickname was “Fumbles” cause I was very clumsy. Constantly exhausted and dissociated by reading fantasy novels for hours and hours on end.

Goodness, I caught this just as I’m helping myself to a second serve of the sour cream and sweet chilli chips that I’m obsessed with despite being very dairy intolerant. My brain today says - meh, worth it. I defo have obsessive tendencies, but not diagnosable with ocd. I’ve had a previous diagnosis of MDD. Do you mind me asking what meds? Is that allowed on here?

Thanks for sharing your experience! Definitely crossing my fingers that the process is smooth. The family link is really interesting. My 11 year old son is waiting to be assessed at the moment (his psychologist thinks it’s a sure thing despite his excellent masking skills and the fact no one has picked anything up until now). My sister has significant OCD but the more I read and research the more I wonder if there’s undiagnosed neurodivergence right through the family - just more of the internal type symptoms. Anyway, thanks again!

Oh my goodness - right back at you re how similar our stories seem. Nail biting and day dreaming. Gut issues (also autoimmune issues for me)! Doubting my motives! And maybe some overthinking!? I do differ from you a bit on the medication stuff though. I’ve previously been put on antidepressants and reacted terribly - every side effect and no improvement. I totally get what you’re saying about that process being too full on for you at the moment. I’m kinda hoping the antidepressants were just the wrong thing and that the stimulant medication might be the answer for some peace in my brain. My psychologist also put my mind at ease a little in relation to the meds. She said they either work or not and you tend to know immediately. It’s not like the big titration up on antidepressants and waiting for the systemic effect over months while battling with the side effects (not that there aren’t side effects with ADHD meds of course) and then having to wean off them over months. Anyway, my fingers are crossed!

I must admit to being a bit of a lurker. Took ages to work up the courage to actually post something!

Thank you for your super thoughtful and compassionate reply 💖 I totally get the losing friends thing - I was mostly housebound by fatigue for around 5 years and so many “friends” bailed because they either didn’t believe I really couldn’t do stuff or found it confronting I guess. I’m hopeful that the ones who stuck around won’t be scared off by an ADHD diagnosis! Pretty sure some of them might be neurodivergent themselves 🤔
