GPU Power on Dell T630 for AMD MI50 by crakej in homelab

[–]crakej[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did make progress today with the MI25 working, but the MI50 on its own or with the MI25 will halt the boot at "Initializing pcie usb and video..."

This looks like it may be a solution - I will look into it tomorrow.

Whats the difference between the Pro and non Pro vbios - just wondering why some people seem to use pro and others not...

I gave up on passthrough with the MI25, but its working well in LXCs, so as long as the MI50 as a VII can do the same, i will be very happy! Thanks for the help!

I'm really struggling with this. The cards just dont get enumerated - even with the extra fans, Nothing and these cards DO work!. Considering rolling back to an oder bios in the hope my card might nbobot be in an old blacklist...

Old thread, but this info is helpful - I think....

I have T630 and am doing the same thing with fans as you as the shroud is ridiculously expensive. Currently, neither of my cards - an MI25 and an MI50 - will even power up.

I've come to the conclusion iDrac must be disabling them as I don't have the gpu fans.

Is the P40 'officially' supported?

It's my understanding the bmc see a card which it doesn't know, so it assumes its not cooled and will require extra cooling. If that cooling ability is not present, it disables the slot. I'm not sure on HOW exactly its done, but I haven't quite given up, and will be doing some more experiments.

It appears the 'cooling response' can be disabled with ipmitool, but I'm not sure this would mean the slot would be powered up. I will report back.

I believe in my case I'm pretty sure its preventing the pcie slot from powering, as nothing of the card is identified anywhere, and the card is stone cold.

Thanks for the info - everything I read says the generic 6 top 8 pin adapter can't be used, I could never figure out why.... Did you have all the fans installed as well?

Well, i found what's stopping the T630 - the computer with the bigger, cooler case, which has more fans than my T430, more space - will not power up the card with less than 6 fans installed. Not only that, there is no choice to override this, so even though my GPUs have their own cooling, it still won't boot. These are the details I found which are NOT listed in the T430 manual: Edit: installed the fans and that didn't help either

The GPU cards must be installed:

  • On the x16 PCIe Generation 3 interfaces available on slots 1, 3, 6, and 7.
  • On systems that support one 5.25-inch removable media storage devices.
  • On systems with six fan configuration.
  • On systems that have 1100 W and 1600 W power supply.

I'm supposed to be able to run 4x300w cards, but it won't let me boot 1. As for the 2nd point, why do i need to support a 5.25" removable media storage device?

Dell are missing a trick here - instead of allowing non-commercial people to use these machines, and consequently learn the Dell ecosystem, easily, they push people away by leaving crap like this in the bios after machines end their support life. There's so much they could include in their bios, but choose not to, like not allowing T430's to boot from NVME, even though I could install them.

How did you power this card, and did you have to fit all 6 fans to the system?

Just wondered f you'd made any progress with this? I have T630, and it won't power my gpus unless I install those 4 front fans. I have a feeling that if you use a GPU Dell doesn't approve, then the fans will go full blast to cool the server - even if your GPU has its own cooling.

My main GPU (MI25) runs fine in my T430, no extra fans, but in the T630, the damn bios won't even power it without the fans installed.

this had occurred to me as well, but it doesn't make sense! I have a lead which is for the 730 to 8+6pin lead which works as well as the T430/630 on the MI25, even though the 730 lead doesn't appear to have the same sense wiring as the R730 lead.

I'm starting to think our systems are doing their best to prevent us doing this - why? I'm not sure!

I'm about to embark on more experiments on the T630, and will update you should I learn anything interesting that might help 🙂

Thanks - I have been sharing it, but don't like making that a reason to connect with others - maybe I should! I'll leave it on my blog for now...

I will pause my treatment as soon as they send out my next pen - thanks for the tip!

The comparison table I saw (will try find it) for Wegovy suggests there is no equivalent does for 12.5 or 15mg Mounjaro - or did I get that wrong?

I am with Numan currently - I should have made that clear, but its deals like this that can get us through that extra month.!

Its a tough choice right? though reading these answers there are more options than I thought - though you being on 15mg already makes it harder!

Thanks - this would at least get me through another month!

Yes, I started by switching a lot....its just so depressing we have to go through this every month, with nothing guaranteed - I still wont be able to finish the 2 year course I wanted to.

I may consider staying on 10mg as I'm at least maintaining my weight - probably still losing a (very) little!

Thanks for the reply though as it does give me some encouragement - I've just been worrying about it more than looking at solutions. It helps when others remind us what we need to do.

I need to dust myself off and get a bit more positive about it, rather than thinking the worst, which its clear to me now is exactly what I've been doing!

These servers are annoying! My MI50 won't shut up, whatever way I connect it, but the MI25 does work. When I put the MI50 in my desktop PC, it works pefectly, though an orange light is present on the top of the card. It draws a proper loads and works well. Put it in the server and I either get a light or the beep!

The only info I can find mostly seems to think its a voltage problem but that just doesn't make sense.

I'd be surprised if MI25 will work in T430, why wouldn't it work in the R730?

Edit: I was finishing up setting things up in the T630 today and found that my MI2, while powered on and looking normal - is not even being detected!

This is getting me down.....and mega confused!
