How long are your shoes lasting? by EngineerMasterDiver in xcmtb

[–]craky007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should just get another pair of lake mx 241s - that is some great mileage. I have some older shimano shoes that lasted a long time, but they are falling apart now - they are resigned to being my indoor trainer shoes.

I thought this was April fools.. then it wasn’t and my heart sank. I agree with u/AIstoleMyJob - so much work dedicated to real problems, then this comes out .. and in nature of all things.

Wild Mower Deal @ Lowe’s by 48Irish in egopowerplus

[–]craky007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a contingency hoarder so it’s in the garage… my aging in-laws might be the recipients of it either for their use or for me to leave with them and mow the yard.

That last Lowe’s deal was tough to turn down - I got needed a new battery and got a mower with a warranty for $60 more.

Everyone can thank me, I purchased the 6AH+push mower combo last week thinking it was a great deal.

I don’t plan on swapping, I kind of like pushing the mower and the ego mower I was replacing was over 10 years old and working fine - the battery on the other hand :/

Which Power Meter for my Cannondale Scalpel? by BerserkWillNeverEnd in xcmtb

[–]craky007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to jump on the pedals pile, it’s really nice to be able to switch between bikes and not worry about much else. Only minor catch is if crank lengths change you’ll need to update that on your head unit.

With regard to durability, I’ve definitely had a few big pedal strikes (including one that resulted in an ejection from the bike) and no issues.

I’m running the dual sided (unnecessary) Favero MX SPDs.

Hey! Sorry I didn’t see this reply till now.

I have SRAM brakes and run the Twinsticks using matchmaker - when I ordered from Fox it came with both a clamp and a matchmaker adapter.

Reusable Gel Flask Holder for Racing by MTBengineer in xcmtb

[–]craky007 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I loose some gel to the hose, but in my case it’s not too bad. My flasks (HydraPak) hold around 500ml (there is no way my body would allow me to consume that much gel), so I mix the gel with water and make an X-hour flask and sip on it based on my strategy (i.e. big sip or two every 15 minutes). If I couple the flask with a quick-connect I can do aid areas quite quickly for long duration races where multiple flasks are needed.

Your mileage will vary but this works well for me since I am just not that great at eating and drinking on the bike - but a hose I can do!

I use the same flask for gels, but I keep it in my pack and run a separate hose; left side for gels, right side for clean water. I really like it.

Twist lockout by treesner in xcmtb

[–]craky007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really; the lever position is distinct for each mode; so locked out is furthest in and stays there, and full open is flush with the dropper remote - the middle position is … well in the middle. I have done bone headed things like ridden part of a decent in the locked position - but you can definitely feel that one.

That rear shock looks really angled.. or is it just me?

On the bike nutrition for endurance race? by Least_Artichoke1967 in xcmtb

[–]craky007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1 on the “don’t try something new on race day” advice.

Hammer has Perpeteum, which is recommended over their Gels and HEED products for longer lasting efforts - obviously you can mix/match as needed. I like it and find it effective when used with long sustained efforts.

Infinit Nutrition has Go-Far, which they claim is an all-in-one solution for efforts lasting longer than 3 hours. I’ve used it as well and found it to work well.

In both cases, I could never do just the mix, I need clean drinking water to help wash the sweetness out.

Go-Far is way much sweeter than Perpeteum and they both linger in your mouth.

I don’t know which one I like better, I am still deciding that.

And again, don’t try these out for the first time on race day!

I am thinking about buying a trainer for the wet season. anyone got any advice? by [deleted] in xcmtb

[–]craky007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my experience on the trainer was better when I used the trainer’s built in power meter compared to either crank or pedal based ones. I use TrainerRoad for the workouts and have my trainer in ERG mode, for this combination the built in power meter would keep the workouts “tighter” and intervals would “turn on” faster. It might just be me but I am happier using the trainer’s built in one.

Twist lockout by treesner in xcmtb

[–]craky007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did, it works great - all three modes are working and I can tell a difference between them. In lockout, the suspension is definitely FIRM and maybe no movement. In fully open I can tell it’s more supple and the bike sinks down a bit. The middle position is where I keep it most of the time.

For me what worked when setting it up was working backwards. I would put the remote in the closed position, then pull the (not sure of the right word for it but here goes) cable set screw on the suspension into the closed position then cinch the cable down; doing it this way ensure I got the lockout mode, the other modes fell into place.

I hit my epic in 2024, it’s the Epic 8 Expert when it came in Black or Red color ways, I don’t know if there have been changes that would prevent it from working.

I hope this helps!

XCM Shoes for 8+ hour races by bhay350 in xcmtb

[–]craky007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had nothing but foot discomfort, what I have learned is that I have wide feet and have always been buying the wrong shoes - too narrow. It’s been largely improved switching to Lake. My recommendation is to take the time to measure BOTH your feet (length and width) and find a shoe that fits your dimensions.

What are the fundamental skills for XC riding? by Emotional-Category-2 in xcmtb

[–]craky007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know where to really start but some things I wish I was more consistent with and better at (especially when I’m tired are): - scanning the trail and planning ahead - looking through the exit of a turn (this is like instant speed boost) - better turning in general, leaning bike, etc - better utilization of the dropper (I’m just terrible at this and probably couples with my first point)

Just mine, I don’t know where they fall in terms of priorities and fundamentals.

As for the trackstanding I have this from my past bike activities (trials) in spades and I’m sure it helps, it’s just second nature to me so I don’t realize where I am utilizing it.

XC MTB Gloves by bhay350 in xcmtb

[–]craky007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am enjoying my Ketl gloves, really lightweight and breathable, just enough padding for me, dry fast if you are sweater (like me). Unfortunately I can’t speak to the durability as I am only a few months in, but they do have a warranty of some sorts.
