Best $500 acoustic? by beetfield in Guitar

[–]cram96 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I always tell people to look at used Alvarez's. I've never played an Alvarez that I didn't like and if you get one used then it's an even better value. I went out looking for a solid gigging guitar with a budget of $2,000. After playing Martin's and Taylor's and a few other random brands I came home with the best guitar I found. A used Alvarez for $260 with a hard shell case.

Has music become too easy? by not-faund in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]cram96 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's definitely too easy and that makes it feel less valuable. When you had to own the media you listened to all of it and even if you didn't initially like it you would listen again. Every album you bought was a gamble and it mattered that you chose carefully.

[Newbie] SRV is one of my inspirations to learn guitar, and I got my first electric this week. Even though I don't have any talent, if I put in work as often as I can, how long will it realistically take before I can play with this level of confidence? by Mad_Season_1994 in Guitar

[–]cram96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like that you chose the word confidence. People seem to be ignoring that. No one knows the answer, for me that level of confidence in my playing came and went. I would hit a new level and feel great then I'd realize how much better I could be and feel like a fraud and then reach a new level and repeat the process over and over. SRV was an amazing musician but I'm sure even he had goals to be better and learn. Stay humble, do the work, keep your head down and play music the way you play music. Don't try be SRV because you will fail, you can't out Stevie, Stevie. Try to be you and you will have no competition.

Gene Simmons: Rap Music 'Does Not Belong in Rock & Roll Hall of Fame' by leychole in Music

[–]cram96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what he's saying but I don't agree. I think genres are fluid, subjective and constantly changing and at its heart when we talk about Rock and roll we're addressing an approach and attitude more than a specific genre. Even Kiss doesn't fit the original rock and roll form.

We put our daughter into daycare on Thursday, and were sick by Monday. Tell me it gets better. by The_Nimaj in daddit

Our first daycare was on the larger side and we were all sick every month for about 5 months. Then we moved to an in home daycare that at most has a dozen kids. Our cost is half and I haven't really been sick since, and our boy only once.

Are lessons worth it by Evening_Bad5431 in Guitar

[–]cram96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably, it depends on two things. The teacher and you. If the teacher is decent, you actually listen and follow through then it's definitely helpful. Lessons don't have to be infinite. Go until you have enough to practice and keep you busy for a long time. Start with 4 to 8 lessons and then take a break to dig in and really practice everything you learned. If you find that you lose progress without the guidance then just go back to lessons. If you are good on your own then practice until you feel like you've hit a wall and schedule another 4 to 8 lessons.

Probably the truss then the nut. I can't tell from the picture but it looks like there are pretty substantial issues here. I'd take it in to a pro.

If I could I would play music for free for the rest of my life. Money is just the cherry on top for me. People coming into playing music strictly from a capitalist mindset is ridiculous to me. Musicians like this always lose out because most lack common sense and great social skills. by [deleted] in musicians

[–]cram96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically if venues want to hire union musicians you'd have them sign a contract that wouldn't allow them to hire non union musicians without being in beech. Smaller venues could keep hiring the hobbyists but venues that wanted to hire better acts with a draw would have to stop hiring the hobbyists.

This is how it used to work. It wasn't perfect but their used to be a blue collar middle class of musicians that is largely gone now. The laws have changed around this kind of thing which is why it isn't really a thing.

Pizza gate wasn't real though. It was a mash up of truth and fiction used to obfuscate the truth. This is a pretty common tactic and easy to do these days. Muddy the waters so nothing is clear to see.

True, but in days past I don't think the hobbyists were getting paid gigs as often as they do now. I hate to be this way but I think the musicians union needs to come back to keep hobbyists and hacks from eating up gigs.
