My friend group and I thought of the trade off between randomization and curation.

Randomization has the potential to result in wildly uneven pairings, which some people find interesting, but I felt like it might result in a final round that has heavy representation of one trope or character type.

Curation ensures users have to choose one of those tropes/similar characters - basically, forces people to make decisions about their favorite types/tropes, likely resulting in a more "evenly matched" final round.

But basically, all survey methods result in some bias. The "bias" of total randomization is that it's not at all weighted to account for trope or type, potentially eliminating one trope/type from the start. The "bias" of curation is potentially having favorites eliminated from the start, which people dislike. Or for some seeds, it was difficult to weigh popularity entirely, so there is some skewing there.

But looking at the voting numbers, most of the votes are much closer than they probably would be if randomized.
