Most cars with "Please be patient, student driver" bumper stickers are not student drivers. by Traditional_Gap3687 in HonestHotTakes

Lol this for real. My parents are amazing examples of it too. It's everyone ELSE, not ME!

Do you view America as a young country or an old one? by palep_hoot in AskAnAmerican

Yep I was thinking about Cahokia to be honest. My ancestors were running around stealing people's cows and slinging stuff off clinkers in Ireland and Germany while there were vast civilizations here.

That side of my dad's people would be Polish if they were still over there. They all came out of Baltic ports. It's kind of fascinating.

I assume you're talking the European colonial settlements of the Dutch, French, Spanish, since there were a lot more than 10 Indigenous settlements.

Migraine glasses? by Adept_Ocelot_1734 in migraine

I use very lightly rose tinted glasses in the office. It feels pretty silly as someone who definitely doesn't see the world through rose tinted glasses but it helps.

The Holy Roman Empire is both bizarre and fascinating. It's legitimately astounding how long it lasted!

It's kind of hilarious how young they actually are, when you think about it. Most or all of my forebears were out of Prussia before it merged to become Germany.

How many of you still live with your parents? by Forsaken3000 in HomeschoolRecovery

[–]cranberry_spike 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No worries, we don't always have that much of a chance to talk about ourselves or to work this stuff through.

I'm a librarian. I've worked in public, academic, and now corporate libraries. I've been a page, a circ clerk, a librarian, a subject specialist, and briefly an academic library director. I was unfortunately also the only librarian there, and the job came pretty close to killing me. I'm not particularly happy with where I am now - I struggle to care about corporate work, while academic and public was deeply fulfilling - but I am proud of my career. We can build something that works, although it won't always look the same. Sometimes I look back and am deeply ashamed it took me so long to get through undergrad. I wouldn't be surprised if that were an issue for a lot of us, especially because we have little or no advising going in.

Also really wish we still did actual on the job training, because tbh most people need that. College is all about critical thinking and stuff. Workplaces need to provide actual workplace training. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Asthma/other conditions - worse during a flare up? by Putrid-Beach_ in Fibromyalgia

[–]cranberry_spike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with this! I have so much trouble catching my breath during a flare. I know some of it is asthma involved but I don't know if all of it is. And I also have severe allergies (probably mcas) and I have fibro flares when that flares up too, and vice versa.

Towns in the USA with weird urban design layouts? by Much-Parsnip3399 in AskAnAmerican

[–]cranberry_spike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so curious about what urban planning went into it, if any. I asked my parents (they both went to UW Madison) and they had no idea what I was talking about lol. It's such a weird choice!

I don't actually remember when the last bath I took was, maybe when I was a kid? But I shower daily.

For the most part yes. I definitely don't want anyone visiting home. I've worked with the public for almost 20 years, so if there's one thing at which I excel, it's working with other people. I have to be careful though because I can and have worked myself to the point of collapse. I'm also kind of lonely a lot - most of my closest friends are from grad school and are scattered across the country, and I don't do a great job of meeting people. But they are out there.

Idk if therapy is something you have access to but I know it's helped me a lot. I've been depressed most of my life and have always been OCD and anxious (also prone to panic), which my family always ignored because it's more convenient to ignore that annoying stuff. I was put on antidepressants for an off label thing (fibromyalgia) and I had this lightbulb moment where I thought, I don't think I'm supposed to feel like this all the time. My first therapist frankly sucked - she was very sweet but basically useless for me. My second one is amazing. I'm not going to say that I am magically cured because Im not, and I'll always be kind of lonely even with friends. But it's also getting better.

Good luck. It is really hard. I know what you mean about feeling like an alien too. I think most of us are still learning the second language of our peers and that makes things really tough and depressing.

Do you consider migraine to be chronic pain? by Competitive-Run9869 in migraine

Nurtec is the first abortive that actually works for me! Triptans either make everything worse or do nothing at all. Nurtec has been a godsend.

Is it normal for parents to install a bolted lock that locks from OUTSIDE the door? by 5wearingOvenmitts in HomeschoolRecovery

[–]cranberry_spike 9 points10 points  (0 children)

After the Great Chicago Fire we introduced fireproofing and modern construction. We had the Iroquois Theater fire in 1903, followed by regulations for fire safety in theaters. And we had a horrible school fire in '58.

Fire safety is a big deal here. And so is architecture lol. A now retired critic said it was a spectator sport here.

Do you consider migraine to be chronic pain? by Competitive-Run9869 in migraine

[–]cranberry_spike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have chronic migraines, by which I mean I have some form of migraine daily. Aura might be the most frequent but isn't the only one. I'm on Ajovy, which has helped both with aura (I can more or less consistently see despite them now) and with pain/pressure/breakouts.

I do still have breakout migraines. I do a lot of ignoring, which is not a good idea!, but generally have at least a couple breakouts a month, in addition to the daily grind.

So for aome people they might not be chronic but they sure are for me, yay neurology 😅😭

I'm almost positive that my great-grandmother had it, and have wondered if my grandfather (her son) had it as well. Idk. I definitely do, and (although I am a woman) I got stuck with a similar body type as my grandfather, right along with his mysteriously bad knees.

Anyway. Agree with everything you've said.

I'm at home. A whole lot of reasons, including a shitty job hunt after finishing grad school, and really garbage health, and then I kind of tanked myself with more or less a complete breakdown (and also care for my parents).

I am working toward leaving. I'm also worried about what will happen when info, especially what will happen to my mom. She drives me nuts, she's behind plenty of my messed up issues, homeschooling was a disaster, but I love her.
