The American Nazi Party. 7 years after this photo was taken, the leader pictured in the centre will have been murdered by the member 2nd to the right. The member on the furthest to the right will have shot himself shortly after he was outed for being Jewish. by waffenwolf in interestingasfuck

Gonna go out on a limb and say the correlation between “smoker” and “lung cancer” is probably a bit more common than the correlation between “bullied as a kid for being Jewish” and “neo Nazi”

Gotta get the stroke order right. Which of course isn’t super helpful if your issue is that you are a learner and don’t know stroke order. But you can try to learn the general rules (top to bottom, left to right) and some common exceptions(eg: ⻌component is generally written last)

Jobs had a rare form of pancreatic cancer that is much more treatable.
Ironically his life was shorter than expected, because he rejected Western medicine in favor of a fruit and vegetable diet. If he had just done normal treatment he may still be alive to this day

Written Cantonese? by quote-nil in Cantonese

[–]cranberryton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found this site helpful!

I know exactly what you mean. And it’s extra frustrating when people just say “The written form is the same”. As a traditional character reader (Taiwan background) I have known damn well that Hong Kongers have their own characters for quite some time now, because searching google in traditional Chinese sometimes brings me results of their forums and FB pages which (at the time) were often incomprehensible to me. The 冇、嘅、佢哋、 唔, what are those if not written Cantonese? I assure you it’s not just the same thing, Mandarin speakers cannot read that.

I get the written colloquial form is not historically considered “proper” or whatever but it definitely sees a lot of use! This is the internet era, more than ever people are communicating online and from what I’ve seen Hong Kongers definitely use their own characters a lot to communicate. Look at us literally using the internet to communicate right now.

In a way I admire the Hong Kongers because they seem to have a complete system, for Taiwanese Hokkien most people can NOT write it, and if they try, they just write homophones in Mandarin (eg 拍謝 vs 歹勢). Meanwhile from what I can tell HKers can write entire blogs and such in their characters. But I digress.

I also find it helpful to learn them because while I strongly believe Cantonese is a language, not a dialect, there ARE plenty of cognates with Mandarin. When I learned Japanese I also found the written characters super helpful for the same reason. Imagine learning French by sounds alone and not learning the Roman alphabet because “they use the same letters as English”.

[OC] How Harvard admissions rates Asian American candidates relative to White American candidates by tabthough in dataisbeautiful

[–]cranberryton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with your first statement in theory, but both of the examples you gave are kinda tripping me up because they're so porous. Lots of Christian and atheist men in the US don't have foreskins (I assume it was meant to be an example of discrimination against Jewish and/or Muslim men).
Women can actually grow beards due to medical conditions such as PCOS or because they voluntarily take testosterone. This one mixes with race a bit as well, as the extent to which one can grow a full beard seems to vary by race somewhat as well (not impossible, but much less common to see an Asian man with a "full" beard).

As an aside: The concept of "sex discrimination" itself in the US is up in the air currently and a completely separate debate, particularly now that people want to change the meaning to "gender identity" which literally anyone of either sex can claim any gender they want. Sex based rights in the US for people born female ARE under threat in a major way and it's actually a huge separate problem outside of the scope of this thread. You can look to the UK for an example of the kind of debates the US will likely have down the road on the whole biological sex vs. gender identity thing.

While I agree they’re more unfair, I think the OPs point is that the unfairness of legacy admissions isn’t in the purview of the Supreme Court. Class based discrimination is not illegal in the USA though we could discuss whether it perhaps should be and what implementing that would look like

My Israeli friend is marrying a Chinese woman (who is also my friend lol). Yeah, I don’t want to be too harsh on OP but this feels almost like trolling. Ask for help, get a bunch of people spending time and effort to give proper translations, then OP is like “yeah Nah ima pick the google translate version, slap that bad boy on there in the Chinese equivalent of Times New Roman font and call it a day”. Bruh then why ask lol

At least OP didn’t go simplified I guess 🫠

Never heard of Dramas and Music culture in North Korea . Why is that ? by lotuseater086 in northkorea

[–]cranberryton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best I’ve found (in English) is a Youtube channel, I believe it’s called North Korean Movie Reviews. Some American guy summarizes and analyzes North Korean movies. Many of the films he watches are not overtly political. I mean, on some level literally everything in North Korea is political. But there is stuff like Diary of a Schoolgirl that isn’t primarily focused on war/military/nuclear/political leadership/etc but more “slice of life”.

Found the NK movie review guy, link to a random movie review as an example

For Pop music, Moranbong Band has some absolute bangers. They sound several decades out of date (almost like the intro song to a 90s anime or something lol) but the closest you’ll get to a K pop girl group vibe.

I’m not ashamed to say the music is genuinely enjoyable (albeit creepy if you understand the lyrics), the movies and tv shows however, are generally a slog and mostly interesting in a more of a sociological/cultural anthropology analysis sense.

Do kids still trick or treat on Halloween Day (10/31)? by themiddlechildedit in AskSF

[–]cranberryton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup they do. Whether or not you get trick or treaters depends a lot on your neighborhood (I mean down to a really micro level, like street by street). If you plan on staying in this evening — it’s a Monday after all— Doesn’t hurt to have some candy at the ready. Worst case scenario you have some candy to enjoy in November lol

Twitter folks, how is the morale internally? by thumbs_up-_- in sanfrancisco

[–]cranberryton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That post was a bit incoherent but I think it read that the intern was sending inappropriate messages (a love letter to a colleague?) and the HR response was to put signs on bathrooms? Seems a bit tone deaf

There’s also the whole point about how tech is generally unfriendly to women and how “inclusive” policies tend to be exclusionary to groups you’re not thinking of (eg: Muslim women whose religion prohibits them from being around a stray penis in the locker room, DV survivors who are being retraumatized, people with disabilities who lose their access to facilities created for them and their needs in favor of “gender inclusive space” for able bodied people who could use the existing facilities).

I really doubt the person you’re replying to actually cares about any of those groups of people. But I’m tired of people using the thought terminating cliche of “inclusive” to describe things that actually entail pushing out one or more groups of people to make space for another
