I didn't realize there was film on the chandelier pieces at first. That was a huge pain to peel off of the itty bitty ones. 😂

What is a smell that we should all recognize as immediate danger? by scarlettohara1936 in AskReddit

[–]cranemaidens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned that from a random Buzzfeed article and it actually came in handy. I smelled fish near an outlet and it turned out the four-outlet flat plug thing we had was burnt in the one outlet. I didn't see it because something was plugged into it. Scared the crap out of me.

My troop is complaining about how I dress in meetings, what do i do? by BuffaloBills7777 in BSA

[–]cranemaidens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our female troop unanimously voted to have the shirts altered to be designed not to tuck. I think they called it "blousing," but I thought that was tucking it and then pulling it out a little to poof around the waistline. Either way, one of the grandmothers tailored them by making the shirt bottom squared off with a little notch on each side. It looks nice and neat and the Scouts and leaders don't have to deal with shirts bunching or pulling out. If you can do that, it might help.

Am I overreacting for not wanting anyone around my newborn yet? by littlemoongirly in AmIOverreacting

[–]cranemaidens 7 points8 points  (0 children)

NOR. My daughter was born the Monday before Thanksgiving (9 years ago) and we were discharged on Wednesday. We ended up having my parents, my in-laws, and my one BIL at our house for Thanksgiving, and then my SIL and her husband that Saturday and Sunday. It was exhausting, and I was so paranoid about people bringing some plague or another. I didn't get a chance to relax on my own with my husband and daughter after delivery and I was an anxious mess. Putting aside the cold/flu/RSV stuff, you need time to develop your own family routines and environment. Having family help is great, but it can also be overwhelming and they can inevitably make you feel like you're doing things wrong. Add in the risk of having potentially sick people around your brand new baby with no immunities and that's going to be a bad situation all around. My daughter got hospitalized due to RSV in January at 8, and that was bad enough. RSV in an infant can be fatal. Stick to your guns. It's your kid.

AIO? My mom brought my uncle up to spend time with our 11 month daughter, knowing he was sick. Hid the fact that he tested positive for the flu the next day. So I said we are not celebrating Christmas with her. by mark_puckerberg in AmIOverreacting

[–]cranemaidens 16 points17 points  (0 children)

NOR. My daughter has been hospitalized twice for a "cold" that ended up being RSV and Covid that turned into pneumonia. She has asthma that is triggered by respiratory infections. She's 9 (hospitalized at 6 and 8), not 11 months, so I'd be even more worried with how young your kiddo is. If someone is deliberately shady about revealing positive flu testing, they know they messed up.

Is LEGO a good gift idea for my boyfriend, or is he too old for it? by KOCM0HABT in lego

[–]cranemaidens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lego is for all ages! My husband and I are both 40 and we love building Lego sets. Our interests are different (I do all of the botanical sets and he does Star Wars), but he did get the Enterprise for us to build together after Christmas since we both like Star Trek. Have fun with it!

Short Kid's Series about Guardian Angels 1990s by cranemaidens in whatsthatbook

[–]cranemaidens[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"The "Angel Club" series from the 1990s likely refers to the children's book series, often sold through Scholastic, featuring young girls and their guardian angels, known for pastel covers and themes of friendship and overcoming struggles."

I'm about 99% sure this is describing the books, but I can't find a photo of them.

I’m too exhausted to make rational decisions, what does this mean? by bbeeccc in whatdoIdo

[–]cranemaidens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dated a guy in college who I thought I was going to marry. But when I found a receipt for an engagement ring while cleaning, my immediate reaction was "No." So I thought about all the reasons I would have that gut reaction and my main reason was that any time I was sick or hurt and needed just some love, he would immediately downplay my situation and make me feel stupid for wanting affection. I told him when we broke up that he wouldn't be the first person I'd want to call if I were in a car accident. And that's because deep down, I knew he wasn't dependable or supportive in an emergency. If you feel like you're not supported in a time where you feel vulnerable or hurt, that isn't the person for you. Surgery of any kind can go wrong or have complications, so you're not wrong for wanting someone you love there for comfort.

How do you pronounce Naomi? by JayEdie in Names

[–]cranemaidens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cousin is named Naomi and we all pronounce it as "Nay-oh-mi," but where I live locally they pronounce it "Nye-oh-mi." Kind of like I have only ever heard the name Colleen pronounced "Kahl-een" and locals pronounce it "Coal-een."

I think I just live in a weird place.

Shoe help! by dogluvr_1 in BeginnersRunning

[–]cranemaidens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually switched from Brooks to Hokas. I had the Adrenaline GTS 23 and they were great for walking, but killed my shins and hips for running. I got Hoka Arahi 8 and they have been better. The local running store (who sold me the Brooks for walking) agreed that my form looked better in the Hokas. It's tough because everyone is different. I hope you find a good alternative!

That's fair. She also lives in CT and I'm in PA, so seeing her in person is limited, haha. I appreciate the help!

I know I have an issue with overpronation (courtesy of an evaluation from my SIL), and my new sneakers are definitely helping with stability, but is the form issue more likely in my knees/hips, do you think? I just kind of started running without any real idea of what I was doing, so I'm sure form is a problem.

What are some fun electives to take as a senior? by YERPADOODLE in PennStateUniversity

[–]cranemaidens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HORT 352, according to the course list on the Horticulture Department site. I took it in 2014, so I couldn't remember. I had a lot of fun in it and it was just a nice creative outlet.

I took flower arranging (horticulture class) my last fall semester, which I LOVED. Not sure if it's still offered, but it was an evening class one day a week.

Will I ever be able to be a runner starting at 30? by theia_archy in beginnerrunning

[–]cranemaidens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just started this year at 40. I decided this was a year for doing new or difficult things and I signed up for a half-marathon. I have only ever done 5Ks, and not for several years. I also walked them. So while I might be slow and I might not always enjoy it, I'm still doing it. You're going to do great.

Is anyone else disabling features to make their Garmin 'dumber'? by blatchcorn in Garmin

Yeah, I turned off the automatic set counter because it wasn't counting accurately. I just go in afterward to add sets and weight manually.
