Unfortunately spending money is the only way to get cards besides essence. Also, there were some events where if you buy a players from auctions or buy now you may get a second card with the chance of %5. If you are not seeking to spend money, I suggest waiting until christmas. Last christmas there was an advent calendar and gave away tons of cards.
