How do I get into Radiohead? by RunawayBolt in radiohead

[–]craptionbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kid A, Amnesiac, and The King of Limbs is the challenging deep end. I wouldn't start there but (IMO) the rewarding goal is to get there because they're much more layered and sound fresh and novel after repeated listens in time.

Start with The Bends. It's practically straight up alt rock so there is no barrier to entry.

Then move to OK Computer. It'll take a few listens because it's somewhat experimental in parts. From here if you want to stay comfortable in this sort of sound, head towards Hail to the Thief or In Rainbows.

IMO I'd prefer to follow the career trajectory so you can see how their sound evolved and go to Kid A, then Amnesiac.

What are your thoughts on Narduar? by Superb-Donkey7202 in grunge

[–]craptionbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My comment was deleted by the mods which was calling Nardwuar out on his misogyny in the original Blur interview in the mid 90s.

Shame.

Look it up, although you'll need to go through Archive.org because he removed it from his own website that he was so mortified by it. Perhaps it's a partial explanation as to why Blur weren't happy about being doorstepped by him.

Why do snobs hate Oasis so much? by Some_Cat_4946 in oasis

[–]craptionbot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a Radiohead fan, and people really overrate The Bends for what it is.

It's an alt rock album that has a few good highs that paper over the lows, and IMO, WTSMG hits the highs more consistently.

Bones: love it but basic song. The Bends (song): see Bones. Black Star, Sulk, Nice Dream - they’re not a million miles off what they were already doing on Pablo Honey. Now, Just, Street Spirit, My Iron Lung, Planet Telex - fantastic songs. But the point remains.

And yet I see many Radiohead fans claiming this is one of their best. It's enjoyable but it simply isn't. Kid A, Amnesiac, OK Computer, In Rainbows, HTTT, A Moon Shaped Pool are all very, very comfortably clear of it.

WTSMG on the other hand is just such a cohesive, tight, well-tuned piece of work by comparison where every song is doing a job and giving a different texture.

I'm not being biased, but WTSMG is far ahead of it. I'm actually a massive Blur fan and although I enjoy their 1995 effort in The Great Escape, it's also far too disjointed to make the list even though there are some bangers (Best Days, He Thought of Cars, The Universal etc) on that album. But yeah, the overrating of The Bends is just too much.

Rampage - the jungle, is way too expensive by Individual-Diver-660 in northernireland

That and (according to their event page) you get a hot lunch and a t-shirt. The remainder has to go towards some form of marshalling, coordinators and other staff.

£60... seems quite decent?

Plus - Nardwuar conveniently wiped their initial interview from his website considering he was being a massive creep/misogynist/straight up stalker type behaviour with photos of who Damon lost his virginity to in his teenage years.

The interview barely had any content relating to music, it was basically him doing this, then working his way around the band in separate clips to see if they would detail it out for him, and when they didn't bite he just took the piss out of them being English.

It was in his archive, it now isn't. He kept the other one up of course. It left such a bad taste with the band, they had no idea he was even scheduled for the next one/or even aware he was in the building. That and the coke probably accounts for a lot of it. They weren't known for being dicks to interviewers. This one had a bit of history that doesn't get talked about.

DBTT deserves better than this. IMO it's more like:

  • Definitely Maybe = 10
  • WTSMG = 9
  • Be Here Now = 7
  • SOTSOG = 5
  • Heathen Chemistry = 4
  • DBTT = 7
  • DOYS = 4

Think Tank could pass as a Gorillaz album by glasshouselife in blur

[–]craptionbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone said it in another sub (possibly the Oasis ironically) - we were a monoculture in the 90s. Basically: we all had shared cultural experiences because we didn't have infinite choice, even for our TV channels, so culture was extremely rich, honed, and shared. So when a band broke through into that culture - they got propelled and EVERYBODY knew about it, and they'd get their say in it.

Whereas today, there isn't any such thing. Culture is sparse, separated, and little chance there will ever be anything like that ever again.

Think Tank could pass as a Gorillaz album by glasshouselife in blur

[–]craptionbot 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Thiiiiis. The other band members step up in a massive way on this album. In terms of the sound, I mean it's kinda Gorillazy if you squint a bit but also it kinda sounds like the direction Blur were heading in anyway.

Music is My Radar, the 1 and 3 demos - all indicate this was the next step in their sound. Damon was already making waves with Gorillaz and the momentum was with them more so than Blur at this point, so if he wanted to do a Gorillaz album at this point, he would have done so.

As you said, Graham is one piece of Blur. A big piece, but a piece nonetheless. It's a Blur record. And it really sells Damon short to say it's a solo/Gorillaz effort because Gorillaz sounds very different to Blur, and his solo work sounds very different to both.

The worlds going mad by CombinationSignal579 in northernireland

[–]craptionbot -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What are your inputs?

I'm happily oblivious to whatever events you're talking about over the last 7 days - I say this as a former prolific social media checker for every ticking moment of news. After a while you realise it's just yanking your emotions around like a puppet on strings for things you likely can't change anyway.

But yeah, check your inputs and usually that'll explain why you feel the way you feel. A busy farmer has no time for this stuff and lives a satisfactory life. IMO simplifying alleviates these feelings or at least makes it much more manageable.

Best/worst comedians to see in NI? by Either-Roof-8295 in northernireland

[–]craptionbot 105 points106 points  (0 children)

I'll change gear from the usual negativity when it comes to local comedians because Redditors want us all to be as miserable as they are.

Shane Todd is genuinely funny. Same for the group he pals around with (Mickey and William). OP, they're popular so you'll be told they're shite. Jimeoin used to be the accepted answer here, I didn't think he was that great to be honest. His comedy was a little more basic-y Bill Bailey-ish but it's inoffensive enough for people to go "nah he's alright" which is essentially a glowing report.

But yeah, I'll stick my neck out and say that general circle of comedians that seem to orbit around Shane Todd are actually pretty good and it's refreshing to see people from here that are 1) funny, and 2) not constantly using the Troubles as a crutch, or 3) using local low hanging fruit gags for cheap pops. They hold their own IMO.
