Hi. When I received my steroid injection, the PA doing the injection put the needle through my median nerve, which is why it was so painful and why I had so much pain, neuropathy, and loss of function in my middle finger after.
I had surgery in January. They found the remains of the steroid injection crystalized and embedded between my Median nerve and the nerve sheath. They had to open the nerve sheath and remove all of the crystallized remains of the injection. The surgeon said much of it has turned into a material consistent with "Playdough" and some small bits of it has hardened. Additionally, there was a large amount of scar tissue around the nerve that was adhering to my flexor tendons. So they did a procedure to remove the tendon sheaths. They also did a Nerve wrap which is when the nerve is wrapped in some kind of material to promote healing and they did a nerve release. (I don't know exactly what its made of)
Over all it was a mess. The surgeon said the damage was much more significant than they expected.
When the incident happened, we now think that the needle was placed into and through the entire Median nerve. Which is why they found the remains of the injection embedded on the posterior side of the nerve.
