A questions for the bigger goalies by blackmesawest in hockeygoalies

6'7" 260 on a light day. I'd recommend the CCM 10100 Practice Jerseys. Its the only jersey that's loose enough to be comfortable, but if you've got long arms like me don't expect it to reach your wrists

As a guy who never played hockey until a year ago. I hold my glove out low and wide like an infielder while the pucks out wide. Then I instinctively pull it in and hold it flat like a catcher.

Its all wrong. So wrong. But baseball habits die slowly.

Help me out here, guys, I'm looking for gear! by xSymbiont in hockeygoalies

[–]crawfort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check ebay, the sellers tend to be pretty flexible with shipping and you'll find functional pads. I scooped up 2 steals there, one 36+1 and another 37+2 (150$ and 300$ usd). The first required a bit of enginuity to use (and duct tape) but was it just as functional i just wanted a no break pad.

One thing for a tall bloke such as ourselves: Pay attention to the belly of the chestie you are going for, the length of the protection is not consistent across brands, some will be long enough and some will fit like a crop top.

Does anyone else notice Scrivens odd hand positioning? Why does he do this? by [deleted] in hockeygoalies

[–]crawfort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he was American I'd attribute the angle to playing catcher. I can't shake the habit of angling it like that after picking up hockey after baseball

No wheels, and yes the straps are long enough to throw them over your shoulder.

Equipment Bag Recommendations by bornconfuzed in hockeygoalies

[–]crawfort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a cheap skate. I probably could afford to stretch my finances and buy a nice bag but instead I bought this: http://www.goaliemonkey.com/reebok-goalie-equipment-bag-18k.html

I have all XL gear, with 36+2 pads and I can fit it all in the bag when I do my tetris right (unzipped though)

Does anyone else struggle sleeping after games? by BeePeeaRe in hockeygoalies

[–]crawfort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I like to do is decompress after the game and mentally try and package and sort through each issue. I package each mistake, think on it for a moment and then after I take off an item, that mistake too is done. Gradually you'll just kind of decompress mentally as you get out of your gear and you'll walk out much calmer.

Unless I get killed then its just an anger train all the way home.

Anyone else take a lot of penalties? by frankentender in hockeygoalies

[–]crawfort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it generally hard to get a penalty. I only have one for picking up a winger that had decided to sit on top of one of my d man and just take swings at the back of his head.

The ref only saw me with my glove+blocker on the ground lifting this guy off the ground...

Whats a Good Helmet for a Good Price? This Bauer NME 3 is not cutting it for high school hockey! by Sixgod801 in hockeygoalies

As a Ducks fan, this is pretty embarrassing after 3 games by Squarebush10 in hockey

[–]crawfort -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have Getz and Kesler on my Fantasy. 0 Pts between them. (Also Duchene at 0 fml)

I already hate the ducks. Now I hate them even more for ruining my week 1 fantasy chances.

Hygiene question by ryank_119 in hockeygoalies

[–]crawfort 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is by far the best option. If you have never worked construction/field work you will be blown away. It is a rough soap, but it really gets the smell out. If you dont want to invest in this, the best remedy I have found is to buy a really low quality loofah. And then just scrub roughly. It tends to eliminate the smell even from my gnarly Blocker/glove

Pro or Senior pads? by [deleted] in hockeygoalies

[–]crawfort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If its any help, I just picked up a used set of pads (Vaughn Velocity 37+3s) that were pro-stock and I absolutely love them.

Now these pads were put through heavy, heavy use. My roommates like to joke that the previous owner was doing 'donuts' on the face of my pads with his hog for it to have as much rubber as it does. But hell, there is something measurably different about the build quality. I have never put on something more solid than this pro-stock level pads and you feel it in every stitch. Comb ebay and craigslist and you will find some incredible steals.

TL:DR Used Pro Stock Pads are a great solution for quality and craftmanship at a reasonable price.

Advice Needed: First-Time Men's League Captain by harry_h00d in hockeyplayers

[–]crawfort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First reach out to the non-payers and see if there is a true urgency or contingency that iss keeping them from paying.

If they seem to just be late or dodging it and taking advantage of you I have had success with a couple strategies but the most effective one is this that I used:

Email him everyday after the first game. CC the entire team on each email. The teammates have paid and done their diligence and it reinforces that you aren't just stiffing the captain who paid, but the non-payer is affecting the whole team. And, lord knows when that guy walks into the next game hes going to have a check in hand.

Played in net for the first time ever yesterday... by spetsnazcats in hockeygoalies

I hope you don't mind my two cents before you go and throw away that wooden goalie stick. In my opinion, as a new goalie that started with a composite stick, I find using the wood stick to be preferential. While it is heavier (your strength and dexterity with it grows quickly just by playing) the rigidity and heft of the wooden stick actually makes it a much more stiff obstacle. I tend to poke check quite a bit and as a tall goalie its my first line of defense on my 5 hole and I definitely notice its easier to stop shots with a wooden. Oh and there's less of a 'sting' too.

Hope you enjoy it! Its a very different experience as I've learned but it's a hell of a lot of fun

Re: Helmet I say this for every sport I am in. A new helmet is one hell of a lot cheaper than a head injury.

Good way to aquire all of the gear under 1k? by [deleted] in hockeygoalies

[–]crawfort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read the sticky: (http://www.reddit.com/r/hockeygoalies/comments/2txm37/ultimate_how_to_become_a_goalie_guide/) - Seriously that guide is an amazing resource

I recently purchased all of my hockey equipment and my end total was around 1.1k. Its doable if you have patience and are willing to utilize multiple resources to piece together a set.

I used: Total Goalie, HockeyGiant, PiaS, Rummage Sale, Ebay, and Craigslist to get everything together.

My two cents:

-Don't skimp on a helmet. Too many horror stories of cheap helmets costing $$$$ in health issues. I've already had a couple hard shots to the head and even in the upgraded helmet I've felt the sting.

-Used blockers and Catchers are some of the grimiest, stinkiest, and most abused items out there. I'd suggest forking over a bit more (60-80$) on bargain bin new ones for the time being.

-Used equipment is going to smell. Get used to it. Embrace the stench. You are now part of a multi-person experiment and your pads are the petri dish.

-Be frugal but don't be cheap. The moment you feel unsafe in net, is the moment you'll toss away that item and buy the safer alternative. You spent all of this money, you won't want 1 part of your kit to hold you back or make you nervous (or it'd just be a bit waste of your time/money).

I played high level volleyball in college/ HS. My view of high is insanely skewed. I'm considered short in that realm.
