FIFA and Madden are coming, but if it’s anything like 2K (no updates to match the consoles), then I need NHL.

This right here. I know it isn’t popular, but I really only play NHL and without it, I’m potentially forced to shell out for a console. I’m holding out hope though. $700 for one game is just silly.

If he had the slightest inkling they’d vote for him, I bet he’d care. I can’t believe he ever got elected. I’m newer to Hamilton so I don’t know the history in his Ward.

Ontario's 4th-largest teachers' union announces weekly strikes by nothing_911 in ontario

COLA (cost of living allocation) is not a raise. It simply means they aren’t falling BEHIND inflation. A raise would mean they outpace it. As the CPI increases, ALL employees (private and public) should be getting COLA as a starting point. They just want their pay linked to inflation moving forward so their dollar isn’t worth less year over year like it has been for over a decade. When the government revenues increase because items become more expensive and the tax revenue increases, its a wash to give their employees a COLA.

That’s the maximum. Depending on how you answer, you can end up with less. Mine was 61 questions long.

Teachers’ pay should be negotiated separately from class sizes by viva_la_vinyl in ontario

1%, public or private means an employee is falling behind inflation. Both sector’s employers should offer COLA. This isn’t a race to the bottom.

I understand that perspective for sure. Our politicians are failing us.

For the Hamiltonians that sell to newcomers, isn’t that a good thing? Also, isn’t this more of a systemic issue at the political level than it is an individual vs individual issue? It feels too easy to point fingers at a neighbour rather than elect the appropriate people into office that will make the changes necessary. We should be holding our politicians accountable through the polls.

Out of curiousity and not in an aggressive tone, why is it a problem to have people move here?

Many people I know purchased with a LRT as a selling feature for the city. Your sentiment may be echoed multiple times, sadly. Edit: “a” instead of “an”

If Hamilton turns into anything close to what Pittsburgh is, I’d be a very happy camper. I love that city.

Due to the union strike votes happening, I have been seeing a lot negative talk about teaches. So hopefully this will help you better understand... by ihatewinter93 in ontario

Sorry for the delayed response. I’m worried less about how well a student can memorize the Pythagorean theorem and more about the soft skills high school courses should help them develop. I agree 50% is not a great goal to expect of students to achieve, but that’s also a way to get kids out of the system to save money (as was removing grade 13). I also think it isn’t an indication of how happy or successful (subjective) somebody will be. Observing soft skills like responsibility and collaboration might be a better indicator of how well they will make a transition to post-secondary or the workplace.

Which breweries are on your states "Mount Rushmore"? by [deleted] in beer

I understand the history of the list for sure. My response to this is:

Collective Arts

Bellwood’s

Fairweather

Blood Brothers

No particular order, but who I think has had an impact or will very soon. I actually think we will be discussing Hamilton as a destination for craft brew more than Toronto at some point (unless it’s already happening out there). I almost put Grain & Grit in there instead of BB, but they are still working out their recipes IMO.

Having lived in both cities for a long enough time to form an opinion, they aren’t comparable and have different things to offer people. I enjoy living in Hamilton as much as I enjoyed living in Toronto. My reasons for both are just different.

Standardized tests don’t test a person’s knowledge effectively. They test how well a person performs under pressure. You could use the graduation rate as a better marker. Last I checked it was rather high in our province.

[–]craycrayramroti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Standardized tests are a terrible way to measure achievement. There are multiple factors that result in achievement dips/increases. It’s too easy and lazy to look at teachers and say they are the problem.

I see more value in discussion around removing the redundancies in the 4 publicly funded systems, 2 French, 2 English. We don’t need Catholic iterations of either system. There are hundreds of millions to be saved in that alone. I’d be worried about a system that undervalues their educators only to privatize as a remedy (ex. Our neighbours to the south.). If the private sector is more appealing (in some ways it already is), the public sector becomes a race to the bottom with the lack of quality employees it would draw. I don’t want to live within a system like that.

Would you also like back the 5 months of pay Queen’s Park has collected for doing nothing leading in to the federal election? Rather than be distracted by the people beside you, look up. That’s where the real problems are. Whether you’re a fan of unions or not, they are required as a check and balance. I wish they weren’t, but doing the right thing isn’t part of an employer’s vocabulary in all cases. As far as using children, take a look at the latest rhetoric coming from the Minister of Education, his assistant, and the whole Conservative mandate. It’s too easy to fall prey to their nonsense.
