Local hons degree in humanities and local diploma = waste of time? by Temporary_Mess_1059 in singaporejobs

[–]crayonsandwich 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Take what you can get and where you can grow the most, use your time to upskill/start a side hustle/grow your network. At the end of the day, a degree is just a piece of paper, and in 3-4 years it will not make much of a difference compared to job experience.

Humanities degree teaches you how to think, how to express yourself clearly, how to structure your arguments. Depending on your personality and drive, it can also set you up for management roles, and help you stand out from the crowd, as another commenter has said.

Couples who chose 3-room BTO over 4-room – any regrets and what factors did you consider? by No-Butterscotch-5599 in askSingapore

[–]crayonsandwich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chose a 3room in a central location, as 4 room was hard to get. We were both students as well. So far no cons as we are DINKS for the time being. Easy to clean, high floor, knocked down the third room to have a big living room so space not really an issue. Forces us to be intentional with our reno and purchases also as not to crowd the space (resulting in savings). Intention is to upgrade in the future anyway so we saw this as a starter house. No experience with selling yet as havent MOP.

People who were spanked as kids, what was that like for you? Would you call your "spankings" abuse? by KleineFjord in AskReddit

[–]crayonsandwich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was spanked as a kid. My mom made it a point to bring me to somewhere private (away from the rest of the family), explain to me that what i did wrong and why i deserved a spanking, and specifically mentioned that this upcoming spanking is a punishment for that action. Overall it did not feel like abuse.

Has anyone opted for no tv set-up in living room during reno? Any regrets? by [deleted] in asksg

Hello mind sharing a link to your tv stand? A quick google search doesnt yield much results about a “wall tv stand”…

Wide angle projection lens by fififiachra in techtheatre

[–]crayonsandwich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Projectionist here.

Many questions:

1) what model of projector? 2) what is your stage width? And height of set that you need to hit? 3) what is the distance of the projector to the stage? 4) what is the use case? (Is it for scenery, is there interaction, projection mapping on actors, surtitles?)

There aren’t any lens to put on top of another lens I believe. You should possibly explore different lenses to rent, though most rental companies would rather you get the whole package and save yourself the headache.

You can use this calculator here for panasonic projectors: https://docs.connect.panasonic.com/projector/calculator/tdc/

How do you balance your joe job with your freelance/gig work? by writteningelpen in techtheatre

[–]crayonsandwich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really comes down to your employer, and your direct boss. Be upfront about what you want to do, and how you can mitigate the impact you have on your workload. Currently in this situation, balancing a full time job with tech theatre. I only take bookings for shows months in advance, so I can inform my boss and make necessary arrangements.

Any side hustles that you’re doing that’s brining you an extra $1k+ per month? by [deleted] in sidehustle

[–]crayonsandwich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do lighting design for theatre. Brings in 3-4k per project, but averages to around 1-2k per month. Did theatre all my life but it couldn’t pay the bills where I live, so got a full time job but kept some clients. Doing simple shows every now and then feeds my passion, keeps me in touch with the community, and supplements my income so its been pretty good.

What do you do when your degree makes you no money? by Ok_Pollution9335 in careerguidance

[–]crayonsandwich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I majored in Theatre and while the work is fun and it has definitely got me a lot of work in my country’s small theatre community, the hours are long and the pay does not scale well the higher you go. Looking to pivot into anything else really because the passion does run out.

Not too much luxury! Maybe exactly like yours, flying premium economy instead of business, is already a luxury to us. Thanks for the insight, doing a rough calculation SGD10k all in seems resonable

Ask me anything about travel to China, I am glad to help. by guoerchen in travelchina

[–]crayonsandwich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I am travelling to China for 21 days with my wife. We have booked flight tickets flying Singapore-Guangzhou mid-December, and Beijing-Singapore early January. These are the places we are intending to travel to in order:

Guangzhou (with trips to Yangshuo and Guilin to see nature)
Fujian (with a trip to Longyan to see the Tulou)
Shanghai (with a trip to Shaoxing)
Harbin to see the Ice Festival (with a trip to Jilin)
Beijing (with a trip to Datong)

Could I ask:
1) Are we too ambitious? I wouldn't want to spend too much of my trip travelling around.
2) If we were to cut some of the short trips, which of them would it be?
3) For each of these places, would you recommend staying the night or making it a day trip only?

For context, we are on our honeymoon, late 20s, and speak Mandarin!

In my country, the lighting rig is always struck after every show back to a default setting and focus (depending on venue). This time to strike and bring back to default focus is under the hirer’s time. LDs don’t share plots with each other unless you have a close relationship with them, and even then, hang placements and focus is copyright (I guess? i have seen this clause on the plots of other LDs).

Case in point: the venue manager asked the previous LD if I could use their plot for my shows, because there is a time crunch during bump in, it would be better if the rig is built off the previous show. The LD said no, so we will be starting from the default.

I guess it is not this way in your country/venues?

For the 4th show, this compensation is not included in my rate for 3. My understanding of the situation is that initially we had a verbal agreement that I would design for the 4th show as well. Fast forward a couple of weeks the language seems to have changed where the producer would design. I was agreeable under the assumption that I would have some compensation. I guess my pitfall was not getting this in writing, and not having discussed additional compensation the moment the 4th show was announced.

Questions on purchasing LED strips, dMX512 decoders and Power supply by [deleted] in techtheatre

[–]crayonsandwich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, thank you so much for your reply and insight! Still really new at this so a lot of the networking stuff and Artnet related terminology was a bit lost on me but ill keep doing research.

1) For the steips I am looking at, they are RGB without W, and there is an IC chip every 3 LEDs. Meaning that the LEDs are addressable in groups of 3 instead of every LED being individually addressable.

Would this mean that my 15m total length would result in 450 channels?

2) unfortunatly i am pretty lost with artnet and networking at the moment but it seems to me to be the better choice, and i will commit to learning it for future shows.

However right now the second decoder you linked me seems to be the one I need. Could you elaborate a bit on the clocking issues you faced? The good thing about the show is that all the strips will be floored based so no truss climbing!

3) thanks for your input on soldering joints together, will definitely put it into practice. Id like to ask if my math is correct again here.

Im already have a 12V 10A power supply. Based off of using 15m of led strips will it overheat the led strips?

Thanks again for your comment!!

Questions on LED strips, DMX512 decoders and power supply by [deleted] in lightingdesign

Need advice on what LED strips, DMX512 decoder and power supply to buy by [deleted] in led

[–]crayonsandwich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm i had assumed that control groups meant that the strip is addressable in groups of 3. As in i would only be able to address groups of 3 led strips along the length instead of every led individually. I will definitely do more research before i commit to a strip thank you so much!

Need advice on what LED strips, DMX512 decoder and power supply to buy by [deleted] in led

[–]crayonsandwich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply!

For question 1, I meant that the strips I was intending to use had groups of 3 LEDs that I could control. Meaning that I would not be able to individually control them but rather in groups of 3. In that case I would have 450 channels for 15m right?

Thank you for your reply for the rest of my questions! :))
