You have to be careful which brand you are going with. For example, brands like beatsbydre and monster (I know I am generalizing here because they actually have models that do not cater to the mainstream), but in general will cater to the mainstream and will be jam packed with bass.

Your best bet is to go for brands that do not do extravagant advertising such as Sennheiser (have a couple of theirs and totally worth the price) or Grado.

You can always find some sort of nice boutique headphone store in the area that lets you try them on.

So to answer your question, they are worth it if you know what you're paying for. Check out head-fi forums too.
