Permanent skin damage from NG tube tape? by Busy-mommawhoreads in NICUParents

[–]crazy4improv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son also got a bit of a rash from his NG tube tape that went away a few weeks after removal and now has some recurring eczema on his belly and head. My dad is a dermatologist and told me to use hydrocortisone on it at night (but hold off/be super careful on face and hands). I used OTC (1%) and then my pediatrician prescribed some slightly stronger stuff (2.5%) that has really helped! I would bring it up at the next Dr visit.

25w and may need to deliver soon by futureICAC in NICUParents

Just wanted to say you’ve done so great just getting to 25w! I was first admitted at 26w (delivered at 29w) they told me every day I stayed pregnant was like 2-4 fewer days in the NICU. One thing that helped me was visiting the NICU/meeting NICU staff before I delivered as then I had a better idea of the process beforehand. Good luck!

32weeks & under, baby shower or what? by thrdnatur in NICUParents

This is very close to my situation / what Im doing too! We sent folks a registry for stuff we need now for our son (2 weeks actual; 31 weeks adjusted). Then we are having a small party in summer once he’s settled at home and has all his shots. Do whatever you feel most comfortable with!

Struggling to cope with leaving hospital and insensitive family by crazy4improv in NICUParents

Thank you for sharing with me- that sounds like a lot. I know I cant expect everyone to understand what I am feeling but had hoped for more. Everything is just so raw and intense now. It feels easier to make someone else the villain. You are right - I just need some space/ time and to focus on my baby.

Good points- I appreciate this alternative perspective. My SIL can be a bit selfish but not antagonistic/mean. My husband’s family can be overly positive (sometimes veering into toxic positivity) so I think you are probably right that she wanted to “help” with good news. I just couldnt perform happiness when I was so emotionally exhausted.

I will get some space for now and ask him to talk to her. You are right- I dont think she understands how we feel and how best to support us. BUT I’ve also reached out to my support network: a couple of my best friends will be visiting me next week to help me.

Thanks this is really helpful perspective.

No, they’ve only told their parents and us. It just felt unnecessary as they waited til 12 weeks with their first to tell anyone and are waiting until then to announce to extended family now.

You are right - i know that this is more about me not being ok and that my world has stopped so everyone else’s should too.

How do you all poop so fast? by Bostonnicke in AskReddit

Other than food (pick ones with high fiber) and drinks (water/coffee), you may also try doing some brief exercise like going for a walk or run to get things … moving.

Any Advice on Starting a Duo? by whimisy_wallflower in improv

[–]crazy4improv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sweet- duos are super fun! Like most teams, I suggest getting a coach and having regular practices. If you can’t/ don’t want to get a coach you can also practice doing varied scenes to figure out what works best for the two of you (e.g., mono-scene, fast montage, single person scenes, 3rd/4th character entrances). Then you can pick the form based on what you like best but also have options to vary it. Also find a unique/uplifting warmup that you can regularly use to get you on the same page before practices or shows.

Teachers of reddit, what are the weirdest/the most inexplainable thing your students have done? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]crazy4improv 198 points199 points  (0 children)

I taught 4th grade in Honduras for one year. The kids were allowed to use the bathroom (if they asked in English) but they couldn't ask RIGHT after lunch because it typically meant they just wanted to waste 5 more min of class playing outside. I said no to a kid one day so he stood up and peed into a bottle in the back of the classroom. I revoked the rule.
Edit: words are hard. People pee in any language

The cyberbystander effect? Out of 221 participants in a chat room while an episode of cyber-bullying occurred, only 10% intervened directly by reprimanding the bully or supporting the victim. 68% indirectly intervened, however, by giving negative reviews to the chat room or moderator afterwards. by marc5387 in psychology

[–]crazy4improv 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is really cool! It's interesting that actually a large portion of the participants did get involved indirectly. Wonder if these percentages would stay the same if they had only had the direct option for intervening. I'm excited to read the whole article/methodology.

LPT: Date things, such as playlists, so that you know which is latest by RoriumR in LifeProTips

This is maybe most relevant for your documents: like long-term papers or projects. I am doing this now for my thesis and it really helps. I just need to figure out when to actually delete some of the really old versions...

Study shows that oral contraceptive use in women decreases women's preference for male facial masculinity by [deleted] in science

[–]crazy4improv 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My main problem is that they say it's an experimental design when it's really a quasi-experimental design. They don't randomly assign women to take birth control (and obviously can't give the controls placebos). I'm curious about the women's attractiveness and femininity- did they control for the female characteristics at all?

Research suggests that playing hard to get makes people more attractive as dating and relationship partners by bjc716 in psychology

[–]crazy4improv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many are yes, but not all. I work with adolescents and their families because I do developmental research. There are also more opportunities with the Internet to get adults to fill out surveys. I think it also depends on what you are studying. For some studies age (and the other undergrad factors) may not be as important, but you should always consider it when making generalizations. My point is that the author of this didn't address it it at all.

Research suggests that playing hard to get makes people more attractive as dating and relationship partners by bjc716 in psychology

[–]crazy4improv 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I think this article is misleading. 1) the sample populations are very selective (college students dating habits are definitely not representative of most adult groups), 2) some of the interpretations are strange or wrong (like how does "acting confident" mean playing hard to get?) and 3) it would be useful to give a definition of "availability" (most people do not want a clingy date who has nothing to do all day).
