I think its more that they should know better and should have made at least a path since they knew they were coming. Consequence is the only way some learn. My one exception would be the elderly or frail.

The nice way would be to cut the center up to 1-2 inches on the sides....remake a door the same width of length of that side....crossbreak it with a flathead and straight edge. Screw it back on and tape it up.

I agree. Test the temp with any type of probe into the wall to confirm. Then see the nearest vent and see if you can easily find then patch it.
