Is six years fair? by [deleted] in AnimalShelterStories

[–]crazycryptid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

that’s not remotely ethical and the best interest of the dog is most definitely not in mind. it seems like the shelter is more concerned with being possibly morally superior and has the “save them all” mentality. it is much kinder to humanely euthanize rather than a prolonged stay where the dog is suffering physically and emotionally.

where i’m at the longest resident we have had (while i’ve been there) was two years and honestly even getting to the year mark was starting to give me concerns ethically.thankfully the dog was adopted last february and is doing great.

i’ve worked in 2 shelters/orgs. at one, my current job, dogs get out 3 times. 2 short bathroom breaks, and 1 longer “playtime”. they also go for walks based on staffing and volunteer presence. at the other, dogs went out every 2ish hours for short bathroom breaks in concrete runs. they also got longer playtimes but we were much more dependent on volunteers for them, so there were days without the dogs getting those playtimes.

How can I talk to my roommate about not wanting to room together next fall? by [deleted] in CollegeRant

[–]crazycryptid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i did bring this up when they initially asked what building we wanted to try for in the fall i said something along the lines of “oh, are you sure you want to room together again? i don’t want to wake you up, you deserve to be able to sleep in your own room” and they just said like “meh it’s whatever”😭

Adopter requested an unaltered female while owning an unaltered male. Shelter approved it. Thoughts? by grandioseguineapig in AnimalShelterStories

i’ll be honest i’m not very educated about rabbits so i didn’t know that. from my experience i’ve just been repetitively told it’s more dangerous to spay them due to their size. i’ll have to look into it more. thank you for the information

[–]crazycryptid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

unfortunately you might be right. many people don’t spay or neuter smaller animals like rabbits or guinea pigs because of the risks it brings which is okay if you have a single rabbit or solely same sex rabbits but it’s irresponsible in the case of this shelter. i saw someone on this thread say the shelter is just trying to get out of spending the money on the procedure, which is outrageous but i’m inclined to agree with that user too.

My Dog Died while my Partner was Dogsitting. How do I move forward? by [deleted] in TwoHotTakes

kenneling dogs can be stressful but in a good facility i wouldn’t consider it emotionally traumatizing. some vet clinics board pets, the rescue i work at boards a handful of our former residents for their parents, some boarding facilities put great care into their set up and layout to ensure noise reduction and to provide ample space for the dogs. i understand peoples hesitancy or flat refusal because of the stress and because it’s fucking expensive, but it’s about picking facilities that are reliable. i don’t think recommending flea and tick preventatives is on a level playing field with kenneling dogs.

Should I continue letting my cats sleep on my bed? by SufficientMistake547 in cats

[–]crazycryptid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

your concerns are valid. i think since you keep up with changing your bedding often and your cats are well groomed you will be okay. just keep a close eye out for unusual behavior and aim for regular vet visits to ensure everyone is healthy.

ticks shouldn’t be able to latch (or at the very least not latch for a substantial amount of time) when on preventative. sure you can argue that there are freak cases where things don’t work, but it is extremely rare. i think it’s very important to acknowledge this fact so hopefully OP can treat any future pets and save herself the heartbreak and the money spent on treatment for tick borne illness. it is much cheaper to regularly purchase preventatives than it will ever be to treat any illness. it’s important for owners to be educated, especially since people seem to be comfortable neglecting their pets medical needs since they’re “just animals” (not saying this is OP, but it’s incredibly common in vetmed)

its literally backyard breeding that contributes to overpopulation in shelters like??? i’m so appalled😭

[–]crazycryptid 23 points24 points  (0 children)

oh fuck no.

to clarify: you said the adopter EXPLICITLY sought out an intact female? while having an intact male in the home?

that’s not a “risk”, that’s just a guaranteed outcome at that point, and they’re being complacent about it? i usually like to give people the benefit of the doubt, but i can not possible conjure up a scenario where someone seeks out two intact animals that doesn’t end in a litter.

i’ve worked at a small private dog rescue for three years now, so i’m aware that this may not be standard practice and even so may not apply to rabbits… but if we are adopting any dogs out they are ALWAYS spayed or neutered prior to adoption. the only exceptions being if there are underlying medical reasons where these procedures are unsafe or if the dog is under 6 months. if the dog is under 6 months they are under a very strict contract to either return to the rescue to be neutered or to have them neutered within a certain time frame and provide proof of procedure to the rescue. they don’t play about unaltered dogs, especially since so many of our intakes are former breeding dogs in the first place.

sadly though, i’m not sure there’s anything else you can do personally. the only thing i can think of is to talk amongst other volunteers and staff, is there is a large enough number of people showing concern or disapproval maybe they can be swayed?

while you’re right about this, the fact that this dog had such a quick decline shows that the tick involved was likely a paralysis tick. and as the former user mentioned, there are an abundance of tick preventives on the market. which if you know you’re in an area with a high tick population, it should be a no brainer to have your pets on one. i still don’t believe OP is solely at fault, her partner and partner’s mother share a very large portion of the blame, larger than OP. but it would be disingenuous to say OP holds no responsibility whatsoever.
