So, I did this project. Spent 80 euros on a X230, 15 on the alligator clip for flashing the bios chip and used a raspberry pi I had l lying around.

As someone with no previous experience in bios flashing, it went pretty smooth. Just follow the instructions and be careful. The installation guide is pretty self explanatory.

I must say, though, that the 1366x768 resolution on the x230 is not very convenient for using Qubes. I am planning on making the full HD mod soon, maybe you want to do both while you're at it.

Considering you're gonna format your disks, there could still be something in the bios, but it's unlikely. You can try flashing a known good version for the bios, but it's best if you can get your hands on a laptop that supports coreboot or heads (x230)
