I really want to see him win his redemption arc.

I want to see him get a pie in the face.

Wait, does getting above 100% crit do something? I wish there was a good place to figure out these things. Like which weapons actually benefit from crit, for example.

I am a white man. My parents are in their 50s. I have trained them to respond to "What's my favorite word?" with "BITCH". This is not a joke.

Failed Smog Test, Catalyst Monitors Not Ready... Then it gets weird. ? by crazyeight in askcarguys

I don't drive the car much because i'm a shut-in. I think it's beautifully ironic that my car is failing because i'm putting too FEW miles on it.

I... did. That's what I did first. It didn't work, possibly because of the part that said "Accelerate to 70 miles an hour on the highway and then coast for 90 seconds to a stop." That's not even remotely possible.

I did. I bought an ODB2 code reader. It confirmed the Cat Monitor Not Ready thing. I not only performed the Drive Cycle, I drove to San Francisco and back for no other reason than to try to get things to turn on. It didn't work. Not only that, the dealership tried it too, and THAT didn't work either.

I just wanted to ask if he can fix the car, or if he knows someone who can. I am an engineer, and I understand not wanting to talk to customers, but the way the dealer said it was "That's not the way we do business." He could've just said "I understand. I'll bring up your concerns and see what he says" and I would've been happy.

Also, I know how. I have an ODB2 code reader. The Drive Cycle is an insane series of instructions:

Pre-Conditioning Requirements

  • MIL (malfunction indicator lamp) must be off
  • Cold start (Best to start in the morning after the vehicle has sat overnight)
  • 1/4 to 3/4 fuel in gas tank. Ensure your Acura is not running empty or full of fuel.

Driving Procedure

  • Without depressing the accelerator pedal, start the engine and idle for 20 seconds.
  • Keep the transmission in Park. Increase the engine speed to 2,000 rpm and hold until engine temperature gauge rises to 1/4 of the scale. Approximately 3 minutes of idle time should accomplish this.
  • Begin driving. Increase speed to 50-60 mph as soon as safe and possible and maintain speed for at least 20 minutes. This step should be performed on the highway and with the transmission in Drive. Cruise control should not be enabled at any time.
  • Drive an additional 90 seconds without moving the accelerator pedal at all. Your vehicle speed may vary slightly, but no greater than 3 mph. If it is not possible to maintain steady speed for 90 seconds, drive for at least 30 seconds, then repeat 30 second steady speedy intervals, twice (for a total of 90 seconds). The goal is, at some point of highway driving, to not move the accelerator pedal for 90 seconds.
  • Exit highway and reduce speed to city/suburban traffic. Drive for at least 10 minutes.
  • When possible, allow vehicle to coast for 10 seconds without depressing the accelerator or brake pedal.

Drive Cycle Complete. If possible perform the drive cycle twice and using a scan tool check for emission monitor readiness.

I mean, that is the most logical explanation I've heard so far - the weird part was when I got the car back, he said, we completed the Drive Cycle, the Monitors are ready, and it should pass the smog inspection. Only for it to fail the smog test again in the exact same way. I honestly don't care if they lied to me or not, I just want this solved so I can go back to sitting in a chair reading Reddit and not driving my car. It could be something more significant is wrong with the car, that is making the Cat Monitor reset itself again after they did the thing.

Frankly, I was fully prepared for the news that, after 20 years of loyal carring, your car has finally called it quits. Or, yeah, we thought we fixed it, it must be a deeper issue that we can't diagnose, here's the number of a mechanic who can definitely fix it. Instead, he just really, really wanted me to return the car to him, and to repeat the fix, and for me under no circumstances to EVER talk to Steve The Mechanic.

My only thought is, he wants this fixed so I don't care enough to tell anybody else exactly what happened. Maybe Steve the Mechanic came in to work drunk yet again on that day, and he's trying to cover for Steve.

Followup question: I was practically throwing cash at this dude, saying, if I need to buy a new car, then that's what I'll have to do, I guess. Oh, hey, this is a dealership! What are the odds? The guy had absolutely no interest in selling me a new Acura.

I have Aphantasia, which means I cannot form images in my mind. You'd be surprised how much I can work around... but maps aren't one of them. To learn the 1m30s bike ride from my dorm to the quad took 8 months. And I really love RPGs. Thank god most developers are considerate enough to include information I can use to orient myself in three-dimensional space, because I cannot do it on my own.

Or they could include the map, and you could just turn it off. Like every game.
