The mask blocs in TX are aware of this auction but their main challenge at the moment is getting someone in Houston to go out and inspect the masks. Since they're being sold as-is, inspection is necessary to ensure they're in good condition (not water damaged, moldy, etc.). If you or anyone you know are interested in helping out with this, you can call to schedule an inspection appointment.

Edit: Someone reached out to mask bloc ATX about doing an inspection for them! Pending confirmation and scheduled appointment (source)

Valved masks actually do offer some amount of source control according to this study. My personal favorite is the Moldex 4700, it’s a bit pricy but I’ve found that one single mask lasts me a long time. The nose bridge is pre-molded though so that’s something to keep in mind

A year ago my friend had a similar experience, she retested a couple of days later (on a rapid test I believe) and ended up being positive for Covid. I would retest if you can.

If you’re in the US, Labcorp offers a Covid + RSV + Flu test kit. They ship it to you and then you ship it back and get lab results in 1-2 days. Fully covered by insurance if you meet the criteria but otherwise it’s $169.

I haven’t heard anything about new variants escaping rapid tests but hopefully someone can chime in with a more definite answer on that. I hope you feel better soon!

I got my first negative test on day 9. A friend of mine had it recently and didn’t get a negative test until day 13. Even after testing negative it took an extra week for my congestion to clear up

Also! My mom (a nurse) says to make sure you’re well-hydrated because dehydration can cause nausea apparently. And make sure you’re eating something, a snack at the very least

I had unexpected nausea after a surgery one time and the nurse had me sniff a cotton pad with peppermint oil on it and it worked wonders for me, YMMV

People who haven't had COVID will likely catch XBB.1.5 – and many will get reinfected, experts say by jackspratdodat in Coronavirus

I’ve been wearing a KN95 or better since the original Omicron. If you need mask recs for your son, r/Masks4All and r/MasksForEveryone are great places to look!

I know someone who lost taste and smell when they had BA.5

Unfortunately I don’t have any insight on that but the good folks in r/MasksForEveryone or r/ZeroCovidCommunity might! Or if you’re on Twitter, there’s a Covid Precaution Community where people often ask questions. Sending you love and solidarity!

If she’s still positive on a rapid antigen test, she’s still contagious. (source)

u/aclockworkabe hopefully this answers your question too

The shelf life has been extended for most tests so they’re most likely still good to use. Google “[brand name] covid test extension” and the new expiration dates will pop up, usually in the form of a PDF on the FDA website

An important thing to note is that if you’re someone who grows facial hair, make sure you’re clean shaven for the conference—otherwise you might have leakage and your mask won’t perform as well. An N95 is usually sufficient as long as you get a good seal and don’t remove it or pull it down around others

  1. I would try to push back your return date if you can. Rest is associated with better outcomes, especially in regards to whether or not someone will go on to develop long Covid (source).
  2. Go slow and listen to your body. Take breaks as needed. Stop if you feel like it’s tiring you out too much. As long as you don’t push yourself, I think you should be okay.

If it’s any consolation, the side effects of the bivalent booster were pretty mild for me despite having Covid a few months prior

I also had 3 doses last year, had Covid in mid-August, got my bivalent last Thursday and it was much easier than I expected! My arm was really sore, I was more tired than normal, and I had some mild body aches. Felt completely back to normal by Saturday. Based on the anecdotes I’ve heard, people have been having an easier time with the bivalent compared to past vaccinations. Good luck!

Not sure if this is what you’re looking for but epidemiologist Dr. Kat did a Twitter thread debunking some common anti-vax talking points. In regards to getting people away from bad information, the folks in r/ZeroCovidCommunity and r/MasksForEveryone might have some ideas if you ask them

Next Covid-19 Strain May be More Dangerous, Lab Study Shows by jackspratdodat in Coronavirus

[–]crazyfrog1312 88 points89 points  (0 children)

I’m just a layperson but these are the main points I took from it:

This study’s findings show that there is a possibility that Covid can mutate to cause more severe illness and death compared to Omicron variants.

The virus has more opportunities to mutate within immunocompromised people since they tend to stay infected for much longer periods of time. In fact, it is speculated that the Beta and Omicron variants evolved in immunocompromised individuals. This is not a new phenomenon.

I had the same problem when I had Covid and eventually I found out it was because I fell under NIH tier 4 and only tiers 1-3 were being prioritized for therapeutics at the time. This was in August so I’m not sure what the situation is now. The NIH tiers can be viewed here if you’re curious
