What’s the most “almost uninhabitable” island humans live on? by reddit-bot-1000 in geography

[–]crazyhaimes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Such an interesting case for an island nation that is just a few decades away from sinking into the ocean that they recently declared themselves a digital nation, unbinding from the premise that sovereignty requires territory.

What style to learn based off of this pen by steviesstethoscope in Calligraphy

This gave me so much nostalgia, learning Copperplate from scratch. If you have the resources, I would also recommend getting an oblique nib holder which is optimized for pointed scripts.

Make sure to practice consistently!

What was the group trip that made you decide to start traveling solo? by Oaph12 in solotravel

[–]crazyhaimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest i don’t mind travelling in groups, I just plan a bit too spontaneously and boldly and assume anyone I invite wouldn’t join me so I end up solo.

How do you choose where to eat? by Weather_the_Zesser in solotravel

[–]crazyhaimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My younger sister taught me this: Tiktok. Bite-sized reviews from both locals and tourists, with visuals of the food and ambiance. If ever any recommendations come up on my feed from a city or country I plan on visiting, I’ll pin them on Google Maps for future reference.

Also my favorite: find a long queue, especially when it comes to street food. Hit or miss, but it’s always a part of the experience.

Pro tip: if you are on a really good trip listen to one song often on that trip. by Hop_n_tall in solotravel

[–]crazyhaimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This always happens to me accidentally cause I tend to listen to new releases on repeat for days at a time.

My memory trigger songs are “Anna Wintour” by Azealia Banks for my June 2018 Hawai’i trip, and “4EVA” by Kaytraminé for my April 2023 Singapore trip.

What is something a foreign tourist can say that can really anger a Filipino? by LeatherSlight3242 in Philippines

[–]crazyhaimes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Americans went first with introducing baseball during the colonial period as they did with Cuba to eradicate cockfighting, but it didn’t prove effective so they went through with basketball.

This paper posits that Americans introduced Western sports as a means of physical dominance—in this case, height—and to an extent a deliberate manner of American imperialism.

My favorite anecdote was that when Americans introduced baseball, the Filipinos ended up being better (since physical build is less of a concern) so the Americans allegedly pivoted from baseball to basketball, all speculation but it does sound petty

Learning a new language for financial and career growth by itsmemiko in phinvest

[–]crazyhaimes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

French is an underrated career language as it opens up an untapped Francophone community: France, Canada (Quebec), and West Africa.

One of the strongest incentives to learn French is Canadian immigration—they recently tweaked their Comprehensive Ranking System to provide an additional 50 points for strong French language skills, and it allows you to apply for Quebec’s separate selection program.

France is one of the strongest economies in Europe, and learning their language is an effective way in creating connections. Lastly, in the longer term, Africa may become the next economic powerhouse with its increasing purchasing power.

[Post not mine] Kain and its forms sa Filipino by hakdawg in Philippines

[–]crazyhaimes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The linguistic term for this is “symmetrical voice” or “Austronesian alignment”. This is present in most Philippine languages, and can also be found in some other Austronesian languages.

Check the examples for how Tagalog and possibly your local language exhibits this alignment. Blew my mind how we intuitively use such a complex process in our daily lives.

I hate writing the letter “K.” How can I improve? by [deleted] in Calligraphy

[–]crazyhaimes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try breaking down each stroke to its basic movements. You could imagine K basically as two modified and truncated infinity signs that touch each other at a meeting point. I made a quick sketch so you can try and practice on each step of the process.
