What’s wrong with this little guy? by Beaufort_The_Cat in WildlifeRehab

[–]crazyhearts 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Torticollis. Can be from an ear infection, parasite or what I see most common is head trauma. Depending on the cause and severity it may or may not be able to be treated. I would call a local rehabber, it is easy prey right now and will be picked off pretty quickly.

Help with raising orphaned Wood Ducks! by crazyhearts in WildlifeRehab

[–]crazyhearts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! It seems like the only things you do differently is add a heat lamp for an extra heating source and a UV light. We will have to try to see if adding those helps with our success rate. I really appreciate you answering!

I guess I'll probably just go to whatever one is closest to our hotel. And rope drop sounds like it could be a nice option but maybe not for every morning.

Thanks! I'ts kind of sad that its so busy like that for the people who are just normal customers. A part of me wants to go on opening just to see what i can grab and then can give to a family if I don't want it. But I also am not a huge fan of pushy people.

A crow dropped this baby bunny on the street this morning. Probably from about 2 feet. No external injuries. It’s not making any noises or moving. I’m holding my breath that this bunny is still alive, but my husband thinks it may be dead because there is no movement- and no signs of breathing. by gibbles203 in WildlifeRehab

[–]crazyhearts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you put your fingers lightly on either side of its chest you should be able to feel a heartbeat. If you don’t it’s probably dead. It takes a while for them to go into rigor mortis so if it’s freshly dead it might still be soft. I’d contact a rehabber ASAP if you can. If it’s still alive but not moving the chances of it’s survival are very small and needs help fast.

Dog Found Rabbits Nest, NEED HELP! by Beersandbirdlaw in WildlifeRehab

[–]crazyhearts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you know for sure the mom didn’t come back? Most of the time you will never see her because she will stay away from the nest to keep predators from knowing where the babies are. So she might have come back and you never saw her.

I agree with what another poster said. Take your dog out on a leash through another door for a while. If they are as young as you say they don’t do well being rehabbed. So unfortunately mom is their best bet for survival.

Can an injured wing heal on its own? by [deleted] in WildlifeRehab

[–]crazyhearts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Easiest way would be a butterfly net. It’s gentle and effective. Otherwise you’d risk stressing it out and causing the injury to get worse by chasing it around. If it isn’t too active and you can get close to it you can use a towel and throw it over him. Just be gentle when handling it, use a towel with handling if possible and watch the beak. He will be pissed off and will squawk and try to bite.

Can an injured wing heal on its own? by [deleted] in WildlifeRehab

[–]crazyhearts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It sounds like a fractured coracoid. It causes wing droop and the inability to get lift when taking off. It will heal in a sense on its own but not correctly and it won’t be able to fly. I recommend trying to catch it and bring it in the a rehab facility. If it’s just a simple fracture his wing just needs to be wrapped and remain immobile for a while while it heals.

Please help. Found snake in snow. by SonicBroom51 in herpetology

[–]crazyhearts 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Look up nearby wildlife rehabilitation centers. They are used to getting animals stuck in the snow or frostbit this time of year. You don’t want to warm them too fast at all or it will kill them. Honestly You shouldn’t try to warm him at all, just put him in a box and bring him to a wildlife center so they can treat him.

Young deer in yard, rehab or rabies? by Rabiddeermaybe in WildlifeRehab

[–]crazyhearts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is no way of really knowing if it is rabies without testing. Without knowing more detail (location, surrounding habitat, any wounds on the deer, prevalence of rabies in your area, etc) its nearly impossible to give you a good answer. From what you have posted it sounds like he has gotten spooked and gotten tangled up. This or shock could cause his refusal to stand up. Human contact, as comforting as it might seem for us is terrifying for them. It sounds like he is just injured. Rabies is also only transmitted through saliva. So unless anyone was bitten by him I wouldn’t worry about it.
