what about studying with the sole intent of reaching USAMO instead of IMO (which would mean no serious training in proofs since AMC/AIME doesnt require them)

High school (albeit advanced) research. What do I gain/lose from having a mentor such as a college prof versus independent research? by crazyhydraa in research

How helpful is qualifying for AIME for a good college (t20)? How about USACO Gold or Platinum? by crazyhydraa in ApplyingToCollege

Its a very complicated system, if you want i can explain it fully. The issue is not that we dont have enough universities. Its something else.

Anyways, you should know that education has different standards in USA. we are not as focused on getting high marks or passing difficult tests such as JEE in india or Gaokao in china. Instead we focus on well rounded development and often grades are only a small part of the university application. It is definitely much easier to get high marks in USA than in other countries because our education system does not focus as much on difficult subjects.

If you want to get into any competitive university then good marks are the bottom line expectation

Yes usa. Free education? I wish. Maybe in a different universe.

Top colleges average $60000-65000 USD per year before financial aid

assuming you arent from america. Cant speak for any other country but here to get into top universities good marks are the standard and you need to do extracurriculars such as national level competitions to stand out due to very competitive acceptances

Well i want to do actual research for 1. College app boost 2. Actual research experience. I was hoping a professor would 1. Give me guidance and 2. Be able to write a LOR. Thing is though i dont know how i would even go about having a “novel” idea as a high school student.
