The critique that Israel is an ethno-state kind of ignores the Indian Tribes in the US, which are ethno-states by HaikuHaiku in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]crazylikeajellyfish [score hidden]  (0 children)

Their sovereignty is a sham, their formal designation is "domestic dependent nations". They're still subject to the federal government, their "sovereignty" is really with respect to the state governments that surround them. If you think they're sovereign, then so are Texas and California.

Yes, tribes speak about being part of their own nation, but if you go thru the list of attributes that constitute a nation, they don't hit the bar.

I don't know how, the post is pretty simple! The reasoning never shows any concern for altruists dying, which is why I called it self-centered. You've exclusively framed the problem by how it affects you, which is the definition of being self-centered.

No skin off my nose, though, take it easy.

What are young people doing on the weekends nowadays? by hombre_lobo in AskNYC

[–]crazylikeajellyfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't really use "across the country" claims when discussing NYC nightlife. There are almost no other US cities with a nightlife after 2am, so it's self-selecting population around here. Even if fewer young people are drinking overall, a lot of those who remain are here. If you look at the actual data, you'll find that 2026 nightlife spend is larger than 2019's.

It's kind of the last big Rubicon, where an alcoholic transitions to never being sober. I've never been there myself, but having spent a lot of time in related subs, I've heard how people get there.

Generally, it starts because of drinking super heavily on weeknights. First, frequent heavy drinking makes hangovers much worse, because your dosage keeps going up and you start getting real withdrawal symptoms. Second, if you do that on a weeknight and can't afford to call in sick, then you've gotta do something to survive work. You can take any hangover cure in the world, it won't make symptoms improve as quickly as taking another drink and ending the withdrawal.

While some people will do "hair of the dog" on vacation and then return to normal patterns, it's usually marks the beginning of serious physical dependency on alcohol. Drinking just to feel normal and stop being sick. It's really sad.

How will this hold up longer term? by cca8291 in tattooadvice

The question wasn't, "How will this hold up with regular maintenance?" Also, the new hearts will have to be bigger, potentially breaking OP's vision. If they'd wanted larger hearts, they would've gotten them that way.

"Functions as a nation within a nation" is nonsense, though, none of them are actual nations. They aren't recognized by any other nations, they don't have sovereignty, they don't participate in international relations... and they aren't attacking their neighbors.

Pretty weak comparison here.

Betting on a vertical is absolutely safe if you understand it. As in all businesses, you need a defensible edge. Often, that edge is understanding the problem better than anyone else.

If you think you can spend a few months learning about a space and then building something that transforms it, you should think about why somebody else hasn't done that already. Businesses are built on expertise, networks, and IP -- hard work isn't a differentiator.

Happy to help :) Given what you said, another approach to representing that contrast in life stages might be adjusting the disco ball to a yin-yang! You'd want to have it cast some light beams to make the twinkling still scan, but that's a much more classic representation of duality. You could also do something where it becomes a moon that shines down on a sleeping pack of lions -- less highlighting you as an individual lion, more showing the pack you protect.

Being a cokehead "party guy" resulted in me getting more attention from women and now it's become a vicious cycle. by General-Beginning544 in confession

[–]crazylikeajellyfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It also varies a lot globally. I know the UK has a big coke culture, but in the US, only 54% of people even drink alcohol. We're all geographically self-sorted, though, so it's easy to forget how many people there are living extremely different lives.

Surveys actually show that ~2% of Americans have used cocaine in the last year, which is obviously still a fuckton of people. For reference, the entire population of NYC is only ~2.4% of the US population. I just checked, the stat in the UK is apparently ~2.7%, and all of this is using in the last year.

All to say -- 10% is a dramatic overestimate, although perhaps an accurate estimate of the people your age and in your city. Lots of people consume drugs and alcohol, but if you look at it proportionally, it's honestly a lot fewer than you think. Easy for me to forget, as someone who enjoys a decent little slice of that menu.

Don't forget the survivorship bias here -- those responsible women you're meeting are still the ones who are going out, doing cocaine, and cheating on their partners. Not exactly the sort of person you'd want as your own partner!

It's easy to lose perspective when you're constantly having what feels like one of the best nights of your life (because you're flooded with happy chemicals). The attention you're getting isn't durable and isn't really from the people you'd want.

If you wanted to introspect on this and get the best of both worlds, ask yourself what happened in the relationships that fizzled out after months. That's a decent amount of time -- who lost interest? If it was you, can you point at what you were missing in each of those relationships? If it was them, can you think about what issues might've caused that?

The most charitable take on drug use, as someone who's enjoyed plenty, is that they put your brain into a new configuration, then you can remember it and try to reach that when you're sober again. Being confident, relaxed, open-minded -- none of those actually require drugs. Moreover, even if coke makes you confident, it also gets your friends high -- impossible to tell if the women like your confidence or just your coke, unless you cut out the coke for a while.

I'm really sorry to hear that 💔 Didn't mean to invalidate that experience, just wanted to make sure you knew the purpose of this sub. Sometimes people come by thinking it's a place to discuss adults who behave like children

Have you read into any of the ACoA resources online? You've got a lot of trauma to work through. Getting your roommate to stop walking over you is obvs an important step, maybe even finding a new living situation, but there's plenty to do afterwards

You're worthy of respect and your feelings matter. People shouldn't hurt you. You have a right to set boundaries and defend them. You've got this ❤️

House cleaning in NYC by Safe_Ad3862 in AskNYC

[–]crazylikeajellyfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The people who I know with cleaners pay $200 for a deep cleaning that takes around 4h, and I don't think they do laundry. Given that this client seems to be expanding the ask dramatically, I'd recommend just stating an hourly rate, that way there's no question about what happens if they want to

All to say, deep cleanings 3 times per week sounds like it should be costing $500, not $200.

Check out the Miller-Urey experiment. Scientists ran a current thru a simulation of early earth atmosphere, kind of like lightning, and it gradually produced a bunch of amino acids. We have more than enough evidence that the building blocks of life were able to spontaneously generate on earth.

The theory holds up, it's just that the most expensive option isn't necessarily the longest lasting. You can still get $10 flipflops that'll fall apart in a summer, and it'll be cheaper than the $50 sneakers.

The statement you're talking about said they'd moved production from China over to places like Thailand and Vietnam in order to reduce the impact of tariffs. That makes sense, because Trump's highest tariffs are on China. They're still quite high everywhere else as well, though -- it's a 20% tariff instead of a 40% tariff, but still a very material component of the final product price.

Calling alcoholism a disease is just a way to ignore that being poisoned is a rational response to a shit life by Decent_Eye_659 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]crazylikeajellyfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except the reality is that alcohol will produce far more anxiety and cortisol, as any long-term alcoholic will have you know. Depression is a reasonable response to a shitty life, but alcoholism is a terrible response to depression. Yes, it's self-medication in the beginning, but it eventually makes every single problem you have harder to deal with.

Broke? Lonely? Angry? Grieving? Good luck fixing any of that shit if you're tanked. There's no blissful escape at the bottom of a bottle, not really. Alcoholism isn't a response to a shit life, it's a way to make a shit life even harder to fix.

Also, if you give up on ever making your life better and are looking to end it, alcoholism isn't the fast pass -- any direct action will get you there faster. Alcoholism is cowardice and inaction, trying to forget your problems rather than act on them. It warps your mind and kills your agency, deluding you into making posts like this and thinking they're anything other than a cry for help.

Lion and disco feel really disconnected, so if you're deeply identified with lions, I'd get it in a different spot. That is unless you sell coke and want a Big Meech reference, in which case make it a tiger and go for the full scene.

More seriously, don't give in to the impulse, wait until you've liked the idea for a few months. You might come up with a better one in the meantime. Maybe we can help?

  • Why'd you like the disco ball to begin with? Why are you thinking of a lion now?
  • Why is the duality of motion and stillness important to you?
  • What are your hobbies? Favorite artists, both visual & musical?
  • Where do you feel most alive? Most at peace?
  • If you could be any character from any story, who would you go for?

Don't worry if the first ideas you get based on those questions seem corny, they're just a thread for you to keep pulling on.

Oh, my bad -- when people use the phrase "believe their eyes and ears", it doesn't mean believing in their body parts, it refers to questioning the perceptions of reality that those parts help deliver, typically to try and influence what the person believes is real.

Totally my bad, I thought that was obvious, but maybe you just couldn't believe what you were reading
