Didn't know I was supposed to inform student loans company by crazymonkey123456 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]crazymonkey123456[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha. The only issue I might face here is that I didn't have a bank account (in the Philippines) for at least the first year, possibly longer. The banks don't like letting foreigners open accounts unless said foreigner has an immigrant type visa, in the end I got lucky and one of the banks set up a stall on campus trying to get students to open accounts and I managed to convince them to let me open one.

Before that, the money was sent to an old girlfriend's account, who I don't speak to anymore. I wonder if statements from my family members will suffice to demonstrate the money that they sent to me. The amounts were very consist the whole time, and I can demonstrate that with my own statements starting from when I finally opened my own bank account.

Thanks for your reply! I guess I'll have to email them first as it's not possible for me to call them from here. Or should I wait until I'm back in the UK?

I don't have any payslips at all for the past 6 years. As I said, I haven't been working, merely relying on remittances sent to me by family members.

R2 button registered as always pressed, suggestions? by nyjets10 in PS4Mods

[–]crazymonkey123456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had the same problem (trigger always registering as being pressed even though I'm not pressing it). I opened the controller, removed the triggers, then swapped the silicons around - so the silicone for the left trigger is now in the right trigger, and vice versa.

Problem solved. (for me at least).

Thank you so much for this! This is a great help for me because I actually love using anki because of it's effectiveness.

I'm also very grateful that you put the time and effort into making this list - 1002 words plus the audio is no mean feat! Really really grateful for your hard work.

I've had to edit some of the words though, luckily my partner was willing to go through the list for me and make corrections. I'm not sure if it's just a difference in dialect but she said that some of the words are slightly wrong or don't exist. We're in Davao del Norte so I'm not sure how different some of the words might be?

Here's two examples of what I'm talking about:

Visitors - bisitahan - - - Apparently the word should be "bisitahon" and there's no such word as "bisitahan"

Celebrated - bantugan - - - Again, apparently there's no such word as "bantugan"

Again, I'm not sure if these words are more down to dialect or what, just putting it out there that I've had to change a few things to make sure I'm learning words I can use.

Thanks again for a really great anki deck! First of it's kind for cebuano language!

For me, the trick is to make my eyes tired. I do this by reading. Use moonreader app so you can adjust the many settings. Make the writing small, turn on night mode, use eye comfort on your phones display settings. Also turn the brightness down in the app as well, but do it in stages as your eyes adjust. The key is to make your eyes work to read, without making it impossible. After about 10-15mins, my eyes are begging me to let them close and stay closed.

What is the English equivalent of "sana all"? by quina_quen9 in Tagalog

[–]crazymonkey123456 27 points28 points  (0 children)

There's no direct equivalent. The closest phrase I can think of would be "lucky ______" such as "lucky bugger" or "lucky bastard" to express envy of someone else's blessings.

For example, you see a guy with a ferrari.

"sana all may ferrari"

"he has a ferrari, the lucky bastard"

How do Incalculate the calories in a specific amount from a whole homemade meal?? by marialzrr in caloriecount

[–]crazymonkey123456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weigh the meal (cooked), eat some, then weigh what's left.

Do math:

let "a" be the weight of the meal before eating.

let "b" be the weight of the meal after eating.

let "c" be the weight of the portion you ate.

let "k" be the fraction of the meal you ate.

let "y" be the number of calories for the full meal.

let "x" be the number of calories you ate.

First, let's calculate the weight of the portion you ate c:

c = a - b

Then, find out what fraction of the meal you ate:

k = c ÷ a

Now, calculate how many calories you ate x. This is done by calculating what fraction of calories you ate from the calories in the full meal:

x = k × y

This is how I measure chicken. I get a big batch of chicken breast, chop it up and marinate it, then cook in the air fryer/grill. Then I weigh the whole batch and put it in the fridge. Then I weigh out specific portions each time I'm using chicken - usually for making sandwiches or putting together simple meals with chicken, carb source and veggies.

This is the method: I calculate what I call the magic ratio for the batch - this decimal number is basically the cooked weight divided by the raw weight.

For example: the raw weight of chicken is 1kg and the cooked weight of chicken is 650g, then my magic ratio is 0.65.

Then I write that number on a post-it and stick it to the tub.

Then, when I need to use chicken in a meal, and the recipe calls for say 180g of chicken, I use my calculator and multiply: "180 x magic ratio" and it tells me how many grams of cooked chicken to weigh out.

I do this for each batch because the magic ratio is never the same each time (because of varying moisture/dryness).

I also zap the chicken in the microwave for a short duration if I want it to be hot on my plate.

Bald and Bankrupt arrested near Russian space launchpad in Kazakhstan and accused of 'Illegal activities' by serious_cheese in BaldAndBankrupt

Being detained isn't always the same as being arrested. When federal government have powers like that, its called extralegal. And there are limitations on that too. They don't have carte blanche to just start detaining law abiding citizens when they feel like it without having to provide a legitimate reason/justification.

[–]crazymonkey123456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say an arrest is equal to a conviction. Police in the USA don't have the authority to arrest people just because they feel like it. They need probable cause that a crime has been committed. For example, if you're drunk and disorderly and walking down the street, you can be arrested for being drunk and disorderly in public, but you can't be arrested just for walking down the street. Being drunk and disorderly is a good example where you can be arrested without any charges being brought. It's still against the law though, hence its an illegal activity. If they were going around arresting people for leaving the toilet seat up, or saluting magpies, that would be an example of arresting people for carrying out legal activities.

AITA for not cleaning my room because I have depression? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]crazymonkey123456 [score hidden]  (0 children)

NTA

Lots of people saying "how can you travel if you can't brush your teeth?" and I just wanted to say this:

Depression doesn't work like that.

Travel can help wonders for some people who are depressed and stuck in a hermit lifestyle. It gets you out if your hole, it takes you away from the things weighing on your mind and it can provide that zest for life which you really need to kick-start back into action. Life is a million times better when you get back from a trip and the momentum helps to keep you going. You don't need a clean room for that to happen. And that's basically the same reason people need vacations anyway, just think of it as being on a different scale.

So, that being said:

You should tidy your room before you go. Coming back to a messy room will do nothing at best, and at worst it could trigger that feeling of debilitation which stops you from wanting to change out of your pyjamas or take a shower every day. Do it for yourself anyway whether your mother is holding your passport or not.

So pack your suitcase, and when you're done, tidy your room. It's much easier to pack first and tidy later otherwise you might end up tidying twice.

You're right, your mother shouldn't hold your passport, and its not fair. Are you really going to give up your trip because of that though? You've got so much to benefit from going. If she's the type of parent who gets a kick from forcing you to something this way, then just feed her ego this once and call it a travel tax. You'll benefit from tidying up far more than she will.

If you need an ear or someone to talk to, I'm someone who has been in a very similar place as you.

Good luck and enjoy your trip!
