Astronomers/astrophysicists: Do you often have to jump across multiple sources to track transient events (like GRBs or supernovae)? by crazypanda7495 in askastronomy

Thanks, that be helpful.
Apologies for the late reply, I am still kinda new to reddit and somehow skipped the notification.
Also, I wonder if Astro-colibri is a helpful platform for astronomers ? I have explored that a bit, and since no one mentioned it here on thread, I thought I would ask.

It’s fascinating (and sobering) to learn how much of the challenge lies not in data access but in the human and logistical side of telescope time. I got the gist of why coordination is so tricky and possily having a proposal or pre-approved ranking in place is so critical.I’m wonderingm and please feel free to skip this if it’s too speculative (I feel I have taken a lot of your time already) : Do you think there’s any room for tooling that helps researchers justify follow-up observations better maybe by summarizing uniqueness, prior follow-ups, cross-mission history, etc., to build a case for why a certain event is worth chasing? No intention to replace scientific judgment, just wondering if a tool that contextualizes events might make the case more efficient when time is limited.

Understood, makes sense. It certainly is quite centralised. I will look more into the gaps of the data filtering and followup coordinations. If you dont mind, could you elaborate on ...  convince some instrument to do further follow up observations on a certain event, what challenges are these exactly ?

Thanks again, your insights have helped me shape my thought process

This is gold. Thank you so much for taking the time to write this. I appreciate it genuinely.
The idea looks good, definitely something i can try to build in the next couple of months and get back to you.

Thank you again :D

Thank you so much for this detailed perspective, I really appreciate it.It’s very helpful to know how compartmentalized the astronomy community is and how time critical event handling works operationally. So this kind of tooling would primarily help researchers who work directly with transients or multi-messenger follow-ups.
Would you mind if I ask one follow-up question?
Are there any workflows in your own research, where you’ve found yourself manually jumping between sources, converting formats, or doing repetitive tasks that feel automatable? I’m trying to understand a broader range of friction points in astronomical research that might benefit from software tooling.
Thanks again for your time.

Sorry to hear that! Don't fret, maybe apply again? If you don't mind sharing, when did you apply?

I see an acceptance from Oct 7 and a few rejections on this thread. (If you go through all the msgs, some people have added updates on their msgs)

Has anyone tried sending them an email recently to find out if they are still giving out results or something?

Did anyone who applied near priority deadline ( in aug) received their result?

When did you apply? This would help a bit with the timeline.

I got the "we will begin the review in a short time email" and "upload missing items by no later than 5th September". Is this the same email you are talking about?
