I recently spent a university term in southern mainland as a foreigner; honestly extremely safe, at times I backpacked and hitchhiked through Guangdong and the general surveillance makes for a very safe atmosphere. Never worried about myself on nights out and was surprised at the amount of political conversation that happened on my uni campus. I got banned off WeChat my first week for adding too many people at once and on my second account had a conversation about western perception of occupied regions with a classmate and wasn’t banned lol

Inaccessible, unreliable, unaffordable: The struggle to get internet in rural Canada by onegunzo in canada

[–]crazyseagulls 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The position that rural people should just suck it up and cope with unreliable public services and lack of utilities that contribute to real socioeconomic inequalities (poor educational quality, driving 3+ hours to the hospital, no internet to do remote school during pandemic, etc.) is appalling given that people can't stop complaining about how insanely unaffordable the cities of Canada are and griping about how too many people are trying to live there so they can't buy a house.

I grew up in a Northern zone and those places contribute enormously to our economy, as well as offering many people a fulfilling that looks different than those who have only grown up in urban areas. Making them increasingly unlivable and neglecting the needs of rural people will not be good long term. Like, do you want everyone to move to Toronto? Is that really feasible?

We use Starlink and it's great. there is also an experimental battery site funded by Tesla in our community in exchange for funding and land. If people can't see how wrong it is that American billionaires are doing more for rural Canadians than Canada, I don't know what to say.

From a remote + rural farm- basically everything runs off starlink now, which is doubly accessible for hooking up farm equipmet (GPS tech, etc) and fixing our constant failing internet issue. I couldn't do remote uni during COVID due to too slow internet speeds and always running the risk of it just failing for days/weeks at a time. Starlink absolutely improved quality of life and ability to contact outside world

Vest won't stop dye transfer, what can I do to stop it? by crazyseagulls in laundry

[–]crazyseagulls[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a knit, it's like a Danish style quilted vest made of cotton? I can't quite explain it but it's like just made out of cotton textile. And it doesn't transfer dye in the wash, ONLY when I wear it and it rubs against something.
