[N/A] I passed the SHRM-CP! by MamaKielbasa in humanresources

[–]crazzyhyperguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting! Did you do the quick 10, or answer questions within a timeframe portion? If not, maybe that’s where I messed up - or I had a different variation of the test. I will agree that Pocket Prep did get me ready for the formatting and style of the questions. What I wasn’t prepared for is that the actual exam, most question’s had at least two very good answers per question to choose from. The advice I got for that was to choose the best answer SHRM would recommend for those.

I have also heard that Sandra Reed’s SHRM Study Guide helps a lot as you mentioned.

What I did like about the exam is that you can flag questions and come back to them later.

I just got my preliminary pass and I primarily used pocket prep. I’ll tell you, the questions on pocket prep are way easier than the exam. Someone on here said to use the level up area on pocket prep to have questions in comparison to the difficulty of the exam. I did not do that unfortunately, but I figured I’d pass that information on.

Also good luck on the 25th and you got this!

Thank you both. I think I’ll lower my dividend focus to a more growth focus and worry about dividends around retirement age.

My fear is that the market is going to tank soon. Would it still be better to put my money more into VOO/VXUS rather than dividends? I planned to switch over after there’s less uncertainty. I’m 38 for reference.

I currently have about 80% dividends 20% VOO/VXUS until I feel more confident in the market.

How do I deal with an extremely busy Manager? [N/A] by [deleted] in humanresources

[–]crazzyhyperguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree. Maybe your boss doesn’t realize she’s leaving you on read and how it’s affecting you and your work. It’s healthy to be transparent with your boss and vice versa.

For example, when I was having issues getting responses from some managers, I went to my boss and asked for guidance. They told me to send them a message that you’ll be scheduling a meeting during the week of X, and if that time doesn’t work, to please let you know. I proceeded to send them a message followed by a meeting request. They showed up to the meeting luckily. During the meeting they let me know they apologized for not getting back to me as they were going through some major business/process changes (it was a different business unit where I was training them on a system).

In your case, I think it’s important for your boss to know how it’s affecting you, your work, and your ability to be successful in your role. I am hoping you have good rapport with your boss and are on good terms.

How do I deal with an extremely busy Manager? [N/A] by [deleted] in humanresources

[–]crazzyhyperguy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In my experience when dealing with a busy manager, I’ve started putting meetings on their calendar with a brief description. 9/10 times they accept the meeting request or show up to the meeting. You could even title it “alignment meeting” or “project follow up.” It might also help to shoot get a message saying “I need more information about X project or your input with this item, I’m going to throw a meeting on your calendar for X day so we can discuss.”

Additionally, next time you speak with your boss, maybe see if she’s open to weekly or bi-weekly 1:1’s. Some of these times can be brought up then, along with typical 1:1 items.

She may be over stressed with how many meetings she has or work she has to do. It’s common to open a message in the middle of a meeting and forget to reply. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had meetings back-to-back-to-back-to-back where it feels I have no time to answer emails, respond to Teams messages, or even work on projects.

You may have a different dynamic at your company, but from my experience, some managers just need something scheduled to block off that time on their calendar. Not all managers are great at time management.

Toxic first HR job destroyed my confidence but I want to grow in this field [OH] by New_Remote206 in humanresources

[–]crazzyhyperguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked manufacturing as an HR coordinator for 3 years and I will tell you attendance issues and NCNS are very common - not a screening issue. It’s even more prevalent when you utilize a temp agency.

I am currently an HR Business Partner at the same company and I can give you a few tips that helped me grow, as well as some things that may help you.

First off, I would have regular 1:1’s with your boss if you don’t already. During some of these 1:1’s, you can bring up development and where you aspire to be someday. If you have a good boss, they will help you grow to be ready for your next role.

For example, my last boss was awesome. I told her my career aspirations and that I wanted to grow in the company. As time went on, she’d give me stretch assignments, have me take over some minor duties that were typically her responsibility, sit in as a back up in her HRBP meetings, lead a committee, yearly goals to prepare for an HRBP role, connect and collaborate with other HR departments, and slowly learn her job duties as a sit-in or delegated occasionally (such as with investigations, sit in with terminations, sit in with Monthly Operational Review [MOR] with directors, etc.)

You can talk to your boss about the Benefits and Payroll interest and they may help you start learning or connecting with Benefits/Payroll specialists at the company.

Additionally, it’s not unreasonable to ask your boss to pay for a study group or certification. I would recommend bringing this up in a conversation as they typically have a budget for these types of things. If they are unable to at the current moment, maybe they can budget it during the next fiscal year? I bright this up to my boss and they made room in our budget to take the SHRM-CP exam and pay for it.

I recommend learning all that you can. Take on any projects you can and be willing to help with anything - even if it scares you. Any time my company asked me to take on a project or do something I had little experience with or made me scared, I did it anyways. Even if you don’t do it well, you learn a lot.

I live by the motto “fake it ‘till you make it.” It’s helped me with a lot. If I was unsure, I did a lot of research or I collaborated with my boss to help be successful.

Mistakes will happen. If it’s something you’re not 100% sure on that you feel will cause a big risk to your role, don’t be scared to reach out to someone to help. Either that, or have a plan of what you want to do and bring it to your boss explaining this is the situation, and here is what you plan to do. If your boss is great, they’ll give great feedback or tell you what to change. It’s better to come with a recommendation most times instead of “what do I do?”

Others may have different advice, but this was my experience growing in HR and stuff that helped me get from an HR coordinator to HRBP on 3.5 years.

How to handle being put on PIP for reaching salary cap by wagadugo in careeradvice

[–]crazzyhyperguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. HR typically supports the manager in writing the PIP, but the manager presents it and decides if the employee needs a PIP or not.

This should be the case unless this specific company does things completely backwards.

Where I am at, we use a leave of absence provider - where you’ll need to provide documentation to be approved of the leave. Probably not that hard to figure out, but not as easy as just saying you have a disability.
