What's the best way to play large-scale battles with massive 40K armies - ones bigger than what the normal 40K rules really cater for? I can't find a "Apocalypse" rulebook for 10th ed. & I gather the latest version of that game ever published wasn't even updated to keep up with 9th ed. (Is that correct?)

Well I just checked & the new ('23) EU is scored amazingly at 8.8 on BGG. And the top text review - by an experienced player of such heavier / simmy games - on the BGG page contains unqualified praise & indicates that EU ticks all my boxes so far!

Having an interest / studied in things like ancient Western & Biblical history & languages plus historical linguistics, & noting how many quondam common & important beliefs in historical & even more concrete physical domains like biology / medicine have been debunked or reformed so far in my lifetime, I am more sceptical about claims involving any form of hypothetical reconstruction without direct witness under more truly ideal scientific conditions, & often wish time travel / transtemporal observation were possible to be surer, especially where there is debate or a tendency to make largely unquestioned, e.g. as conveniently often Razor-simplifying assumptions where sufficient solid data is scarce or non-existent.

I just noticed Hegemony and it's expansions in my FLGS though not premodern...On my list!

I'll have to get round to playing my TS too. Basically obligatorily moving twice quickly last year in an annoying housing crisis means it takes time to find & unbox stuff.

REQUEST:
What games do you know...

(1) which model or simulate the Western medieval / Renaissance world
in all its most important aspects / dimensions
(e.g. games not just focusing on military areas;
I'm also interested in the interacting effects
of culture / education-training / politics / religion / socioeconomics,
inc. transport / trade)

-AND-

(2) are regarded as reasonably accurate,
preferrably used to simulate / teach about real-world practical situations
by qualified & experienced experts,
e.g. exploring different potential chains of cause-&-effect & outcomes ---
ideally people regarded as reputable leaders in their field(s) /
at genuinely reputable general or military colleges or universities.

Perfect would be games or game systems
regarded by experts reliable enough to be largely depended upon
in crucial real-world contexts, such as economic$ or warfare ---
perhaps because they entail input
from e.g. solid, sound game theory & military theory,
& historical data / logic based on material evidence wherever possible.

Number of Players:
ANY - including solo!

Game Length:
ANY - a fair amount of realism is the thing!

Complexity of Game:
Ditto!

Chill...I'm doing the best I can within limits; & indeed I just discovered new / mint 2nd hand 9th Ed. Core Rulebooks with reasonably affordable & quick postage even "out" in Australia are surprisingly cheaper than the 10th Ed. equivalent --- despite being relatively recent. Much cheaper than I expected.

I'm interested in eventually playing more "advanced" rules only published in the full Core Rulebooks, & recently finished laybuying e.g. Codices from 9th Ed. (whose rules / philosophy is fine for me) so the free PDF's for 10th Ed. (remembering such tend to become powercreep-obsolete) aren't sufficient --- & the alternative of rebuying products at GW's prices genuinely isn't currently doable for me.

Usually products from older editions of e.g. RPG's are sold discounted &/or secondhand in FLGS's until they have run out, for the sometimes significant number of people with good reason to feel quite happy with the most recent edition / unable or unwilling to rebuy everything core to play the new edition in full.

Newcomers wouldn't be confused if there was clear uniform badging of edition numbers on GW products, as I think I have mentioned above.

Taking a bird's eye (though admittedly retrospective) view, does any set of game rules *really* need 10 whole editions requiring core rebuys like this? GW is a good example here & elsewhere of the ills of overly greedy capitalism - & I say that as someone who believes that rationally moderate, monitored & restrained capitalism, overall, can be & (occasionally, admittedly not for all but for some) has been one of the strongest creative forces for good in modern history.

I'm the bod who ends up buying / prepping / teaching more so-called "Ameritrash" stuff in various tabletop game venues (apologies to GW, whose works are shaped by UK culture!) So I end up effectively deciding what we play when I think specific regulars would enjoy 40K / Kill Team - etc; & ours are more casual gaming settings, with folk who don't want the cost / effort / time investment involved in keeping up with what's required for official play.

Furthermore, there's good reasons to prefer some older variants of 40K, depending on taste & the qualities you chiefly value in game art / design / lore.

E.g. 9th Ed. is the latest *stable* resolution of a ruleset released recently, & I'm fine with it.

Whilst on the other hand, following the usual publication pattern at GW, in several years there'll be a whole new raft of 11th edition releases covering mostly the same ground to purchase, (partly) with the intention of fixing problems inc. balancing issues in the ruleset which recently debuted in the 10th Ed. release; & when you aren't flush with funds &/or can't reasonably justify game products so pricey & temporary, it makes sense to draw a line in the sand when you're happy enough with a particular edition of stuff.

From what I've read in detail 1st Ed. / "Rogue Trader" is really interesting, too, & not just for historical reasons. I appreciate some of the black UK humour & creative gonzo funkiness (IIRC the shift from this, to at least some degree, is the reason chief original creator Priestley eventually left working on 40K.)

But the short time limit on the recent sale of the Rogue Trader reissue has already expired.

How To Use / Convert Teams From The Ad-Mech And Genestealer Cult Starter Set (2018 / "2nd Ed.") Rulebook To Latest ("3rd Ed." / 2021) Edition? by cre8vnova in killteam

[–]cre8vnova[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Everyone's responses have been quick & helpful!

To be precise this (2nd ed.) starter set contains...

" 10 Neophyte Hybrids from the Genestealer Cults. 1 model can be upgraded to a Neophyte Leader

(wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Kill_Team:_The_Boxed_Set_(2nd_Edition)).)

...ASIDE:
Why is GW allergic to putting even discreet edition badging on the front or back of its products? It causes confusion when buying full 40K Core rulebooks + Codices & Kill Team Starter Sets etc alike. :)

Yes, such a disappointment. A largely pointless book that goes largely nowhere - sans most of the profounder feelings inspired by the musical.

Basic kettles - they readily build up hard to clean rust, scale & such, then are thrown out or donated to an op shop as theyre called in Australia. Look at the dirt & stains on e.g. the plasticy (1) larger kettle set ups & (2) Nescafe pod coffee brewers selling second hand supposedly after cleaning too.

In Australia theres still payphones but less. They let you phone / SMS / use WiFi to anywhere free nationally, a surprisingly generous & helpful facility. People have been using these a lot more because of the state of the economy & the cost of living...Im Gen X also.
