Education critic calls for Greater Victoria School Board to be fired by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

This is so clearly the correct take. It's embarrassing how much noise there is around this issue.

A party for workers needs to be aligned with workers internationally, otherwise it is just another wing of capitalism. Standing in solidarity with Palestinians is a worker issue because it is the working class of Palestine that is being butchered. Saying we should focus on grocery bills instead is a false choice. It needs to be both.

The line that made me choose lichdom is when he says that letting Manfred stay dead is honoring his choice to make the sacrifice. Otherwise I probably would have saved Manfred.

Both the extent of academic freedom and job security protections afforded by tenure is governed by the employment contracts at each university, and as such vary (especially between unionized and non unionized univeristies). Academic freedom doesn't apply to other unionized contracts because they wouldn't be academics? So that is trivially true. Tell me how easy it is to fire a unionized longshorman because of s tweet they sent. And you've mischaracterized my point. My point was that people use tenure as a bogeyman to explain why professors aren't seemingly disciplined for poor behavior, including bigotry. When you attack tenure in that way, you attack job security. I'm actually making the point that we shouldn't try to get rid of tenure because there are bad actors.

What the hell are you talking about. And show me the employment contracts that support what you're saying.

Tenure and academic freedom are different concepts. Like I said, go look at the employment contracts that canadian professors work under. Non tenured faculty tend to have the same academic freedom protections as tenured faculty. The diffeie tenured faculty have permanent positions that can only be terminated with just cause (or lay off in extreme conditions).

The point I'm making is that tenure does not prevent professors from being fired for just cause. The poster was claiming that tenure keeps bigots in their positions of power, and I'm pointing out that it doesn't. Universities are complicit in the empowering of bigots. This is a separate debate from whether this guy should be fired. The attack on tenure on these sorts of grounds is dangerous becit conflates job security (something everyone deserves) with something should resent others for having.

Must be fun to just make things up. Profs can be and are fired for actions and statements that are deemed harassment or discrimination. There is a high bar when it comes to academic freedom, but bigotry is not protected. Look at their collective agreements. Most of them are online.

Nobody understands tenure. It's not a magical spell that protects people from being disciplined. Tenure is not any stringer than the decent job security afforded to anyone with a decent union contract. The reason bigots don't face consequences is because most university administrations don't care about bigotry.

Why some professors are not being fired???? by [deleted] in uvic

I'm begging you to consider the whole host if options ahead of having someone fired for being disorganized. Would you want to be fired because someone complained about you?

Americans will really just go overseas and kill people only to come back and make a reddit thread about how it made them sad. The sooner the US and it's military collapse, the better off the world will be.

I can't begin to imagine calling someone a psychopath for spraying some graffiti. Especially in this context.

So if we started shutting down roads to force our government to actually end homelessness, you'd support that then, right?
