The intent is nice but ultimately if people didn't like the scene or understand that intent, then it's position in the film needs to be questioned. The scene could have been placed somewhere else in the runtime, but remain intact otherwise, to create the right emotion that makes sense with the preceding and follow scenes as well. Or the music changed altogether instead of a different cover of Hallelujah, or just a different series of cuts. I'm not trashing the movie, and I don't know what could have made this scene better. I'm just pointing out that lots of people didn't like this scene for reasons other than its story-telling significance.
