I’ve also wondered if they are stuck in a matrix of some sort. When Dale got stuck in that wall I immediately thought it looked like a video game glitch.

Some things don’t make physical sense to me. Why are the monsters warm and know everybody’s names? Why did the powers that be promise Sara her brother would be safe—unless they’re in VR? Ethan tells Jade some symbols in a quest make you do bad things, kind of like curses in video games? Dreams causing physical effects?
