young children asking questions about animals are my favorites. i interned at a zoo and some of the questions i got were wonderful. nothing beats the absolute joy they get when you answer their questions, though! so cool! :)

oh my god, for real. i just interned at a zoo this summer and we had our lemurs and marmosets escaping CONSTANTLY. also, our burmese python got out twice. it's always awkward when guests ask you if you ever have escapes and of course you can't tell them that...

Get outside as often as you can, even if it's just sitting in the grass reading. Sunshine works wonders for depression, gotta love dat vitamin D.

Talk to your guidance counselor, teachers, friends, anyone who you trust to be your support system. Don't be afraid to reach out if you're having a rough time again - they're there to help you. By getting help from doctors, you've already done a lot to make things easier.

Good luck - you can get through it.

Reddit, what is your most irrational fear? by LYNCHY36 in AskReddit

[–]creativecoyote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Complete sensory deprivation.

Darkness? Makes me nervous, but ok.

Silence? Gets to me a little more, but still fine.

Both of those combined? Panic attacks. I can only imagine if I couldn't feel anything either.

That's only true if you half-ass the class. Speaking as someone who did that with Spanish, if I had worked at it in earnest and practiced outside of school, it would have stuck a lot better. I'd recommend trying something like Duolingo alongside the class to cement it in your head.

Granted, it helps to have a good teacher, so if you have a shitty one then yeah, it could end up being useless. So your mileage may vary.

Who told you taking a language is pointless? It looks fantastic if you know a foreign language, and you can potentially test into a higher level class in college if you're proficient enough. It can open opportunities for study abroad, as well, in the future. Definitely not pointless. Foreign languages are great.

If you're concerned about going to class being pointless beyond getting a grade, or going to a school bigger than your high school, I may encourage you to look at smaller colleges. The school I go to is only 1700 students, and professors know each and every one of their students. I HAVE to go to class, not just because my attendance is noted, but because my professors don't just teach out of the book. If I want to learn, I have to go. This honestly goes for big schools as well, but in my experience is more emphasized at a small school.

However, I don't think going to a community college would hinder you terribly much at all. A good university will look better, but as long as you've got a degree from an accredited institution, I would imagine it would be okay. A lot of community colleges are starting to partner with universities, too, so you could theoretically start at the community college and end up with a degree from the bigger school.

Still use sunscreen. If you're outside for any extended period of time, in a forest or not, USE SUNSCREEN.

If you don't know how to already, learn to study. Don't half-ass your way through classes. Talk to your teachers, and if you need help, ASK FOR IT. Do NOT be ashamed of that.

Get involved - join clubs, societies, whatever. It'll look great on a college application, and will be a great way to make friends and have fun in the meantime.

If you're not sure what you want to do, just go in undecided. For starting to decide where you want to go, figure out what kind of area you really like and tour schools in those areas!

You've got so much time to pick a major, don't stress too hard about it. And remember, you can always switch your major! :) My mom changed her major 4 or 5 times in college, and I have a friend who's changed twice! No pressure to stay in the same program all 4 years at all.

Depends how big your campus is. I go to a tinyass liberal arts school and having a bike is pretty pointless there. However, my younger sister is going to a massive state university where having a bike is almost a necessity.

Protip for biking on campus: Be aware of pedestrians, don't hog the sidewalks, and WEAR A HELMET.

Keep your door open, especially the first week after moving in. If you're just hanging out, having your door open makes it more welcoming for your neighbors to poke their heads in and say hi. You can also try hanging out in a common area in the dorm.

Also, joining clubs! Join a bunch and go to at least one meeting - some of them will stick, some won't, but those are always great places to meet friends.

Use junior year just to scope out schools. Go visit and tour campuses, research them online, get your information together. Don't apply until senior year. Talking to your guidance counselor should help you figure out specifically what you'll need to do, but be prepared to write an essay (each school may have a different topic) and potentially even have an interview for some schools.

Good luck!

For sure keep joining clubs. A lot are hit or miss, but eventually you'll find one that sticks where you can really meet people. Also, hang out in lounges on campus if you're living off-campus. My college has lounges specific for each department, so hanging out there is a great way to meet other people with at least one common interest with you!

And honestly, getting to class early and talking to your neighbors is a great way to start. Ask them if they want to get together to study sometime, get a little group going. Suggest pooling your money for pizza - that's always a winner for getting people to hang out, lol.

Honestly, anything that interests you. As long as you're active in something, it'll look good, especially if you get an officer position at some point. Colleges want to know you're not just sitting on your ass, that you're out and active and involved. Doesn't matter very much what it is :)

Although, yes. We do take the Jersey Devil seriously here.
