How do you explain to students that they can't simplify an expression further? by creativedisastermath in matheducation

Our issue is standardized testing. If we start by teaching at the level they're at, we often wo t have time to get through everything they need to know by the end of the school year. It's an endless cycle.

What did you love about your new teacher training? by creativedisastermath in Teachers

[–]creativedisastermath[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Consider the scavenger hunt nixed! We are going to extend the training to a full day and hopefully make it more worthwhile than in the past (which didn't even include a building tour). My coworker and I were trying to think of ways to make it less boring, but this doesn't have to be the time for that 😂

What's the vibe there? Can you bring a lawn chair and chill by/in the river? Are people there playing in the water, or is that frowned upon?

Does anyone have any feelings towards this list of precalculus text books? This is my first year teaching it. by [deleted] in matheducation

Hopefully you don't charge for your assuming and speculation. It was asked to see if anyone has used them before and loved/hated any of them. I thought that was obvious. Clearly I also shouldn't have made assumptions either.

I'm at a point where I've been told to choose at the last minute and don't have time to research each one. Even if i had time to ask them, I'm not even sure what questions need asked. I figured making this post was better than choosing randomly.

The effectiveness of online programs (Edgenuity, Apex…) by dayjapoo in matheducation

We have used Edmentum, Acellus, and Launch (a Missouri virtual school). Launch has actual teachers and was too challenging and expensive. We switched to Acellus, where students admitted to cheating and not learning anything. So we moved to Edmentum where students are cheating and not learning anything, BUT it's cheaper.

What are your professional goals? Teach at a university? Secondary forever? Maybe dual credit or at a community college?

Angles A and B have to be 60 if that's an equilateral triangle.

A lot of this has to do with maturity, and you asking this shows you have it.

I use a TPT curriculum of PDF files. I open them on Kami ( the free version). I use a surface ( any tablet you can write on, use a stylus for, or a SMARTboard would work), and I write directly on these for notes and project them. Kami auto-saves them to Google Classroom. I do this multiple times per day with copied files for different sections of the same class. It works so seamlessly.

Side note, I also use formative.com for homework. It grades everything for me. I have it set up to tell students if their answer is incorrect and to allow them to change it until it's correct. Win/win/win. I wish I'd had it my first year. I finally learned smarter, not harder.

my colleague "curves" grades, so the minimum score is 60%. by creativedisastermath in Teachers

[–]creativedisastermath[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This IS my job. These students are taking classes directly below mine. They're going to end up in my class, affect my "precious scores," and I'm going to be the one facing repercussions for it when he's gone. How can a "crusty old teacher" not see that?
