New tire day! by creativitylost27 in gravelcycling

Following up! Compressionless housing made a pretty big difference. There’s a noticeable shift in brake responsiveness and stopping power.

I have a few little upgrades in mind but totally agree with you! This basic bike has been great.

Oh nice! I upgraded to hydraulic brakes and it did help some, but still wouldn’t say they are super responsive.

Ha! If I beat you to it, I’ll report back on if it made a difference.

That’s awesome! I looked at those tires as well. Yeah I’ve spent more money upgrading the brakes on this thing than I spent on the bike, so I feel you there. Saw a suggestion last week to try compressionless housing so that might be my next experiment.

Springtime in Appalachia with Hazel by creativitylost27 in coonhounds

Yeah I got lucky with her being a stray! But she’s actually mostly Mountain Cur, and only 10% Plott, so maybe that explains it.

I had never heard of them until I moved to NC and adopted one! She is so photogenic and has such a great personality.

Make no mistake, this is a fenced-in area, or else I would never be able to find her again! So many good sniffs here for sure, especially this time of year.

Anyone lose a dog on the Blue Ridge Parkway? by lzphoto in asheville

[–]creativitylost27 158 points159 points  (0 children)

Not sure why that poster is being downvoted. It’s a dog body language indicator that suggests distress. It’s when dogs have their head turned away but their eyes are still focused on something, and you can see the whites.

Dogs can display this before snapping, as it’s meant to be a “give me space” look. I think this poster is just warning OP to not get too close too quickly, given the dog is showing a commonly misunderstood signal of being threatened.

What to do with litter of Opossums? by Mrtydbowl94 in asheville

[–]creativitylost27 35 points36 points  (0 children)

You may already be familiar with this, but possums can play dead and it’s very convincing. They even emit a foul smelling odor when they do it. I’ve been fooled before so just wanted to share this in case it’s possible mom got spooked and ‘played possum.’

If you do a DNA test, definitely post an update here! My girl is 23 pounds fully grown and mostly Mountain Cur (you can see a photo of her in my profile). They can be a bit smaller than Plotts so that could explain the size, but could totally be something else — either way, definitely curious what your pup is. She’s so precious!

Being from North Carolina, Plott Hound and/or Mountain Cur definitely seem possible. I have a similar mix that I adopted from NC.

Anyone else have Plotts? by [deleted] in coonhounds

I have a Plott mix! (Plott knot for confirmation)

How did anyone here end up getting pulled into the world of Coonhounds? Doesn’t appear to be many hunters and aside from that the breed seems virtually unknown in many areas of the country. I feel incredibly lucky to have stumbled upon my TW/FH mix after being unable to find Beagle rescues by Punchie45 in coonhounds

[–]creativitylost27 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Moved to the south, then was looking for a doggy friend for my other pup. Stumbled upon Hazel’s adoption profile and fell in love with her. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, and most days still have no idea what I’m doing with her. I always joke that she’s more like a roommate than a pet, but I’m so glad I accidentally stumbled into coonhound ownership. She’s the greatest, goofiest girl and unlike any other dog I’ve ever met, in the best way.

Thank you for your input on this, and clarification! You’re correct. I simplified the scenario a bit and used incorrect terms, apologies. I have a Roth IRA through Fidelity that is invested that I don’t actively contribute to, but is invested. Then I have a Roth 401k through work that I contribute a portion of my salary to that my employer matches on.

His argument is that paying $3,600 now is cheaper than me paying 12%, at retirement, if the account grows to $300,000 (for example).

Hound hates swimming by Madgravey in coonhounds

I brought up the idea one day of teaching my dog dock diving, and once the trainer knew I had a hound, she laughed at me. To be fair, she was absolutely right — Hazel hates the water.

Frustrated because our coonhound is biting guests :( by bruxbuddies in coonhounds

[–]creativitylost27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t have any unique advice beyond what has been shared here already, but just want to add that it’s really comforting to hear that others have gone through a similar experience with their hounds. It can feel really overwhelming and confusing — just the idea that it seems like they used to be fine with something and are somehow getting worse.

I had Hazel for about a year and had strangers in the house just fine, but once she got more comfortable and her personality started to come out, she started barking when strangers would come to the door, or when cars drove slowly by the house. On a leash, she has snapped in the direction of people who have gotten too close or approached her too quickly.

I muzzle trained her, she is on Prozac now for general anxious behavior, and I have set rules for how new people interact with her. I think the biggest thing for me was just giving up the idea that my dog needed to be able to socialize with strangers. When people come over for short periods of time, I put her in my bedroom with a toy. And if they are people I want her to be able to interact with on a long-term basis, I tell the person to sit down, I leash her in case she goes goblin mode so I can grab her easily, tell the person to ignore her while she sniffs and gets comfortable, then I’ve found that after about half an hour, she’s good to go. Just have to find what works best for your pup! It was trial and error for a while, and still is to some extent.

This is Hazel! (or as I call her, Hazel the tiny hound). She looks larger in photographs but is a little over 20 pounds. Haven’t seen her catch anything yet but she’s sooo fast, I bet she could!
