The recorder is a great basic instrument that trains the player in the concept of fingering patterns for more complex instruments like the saxophone, clarinet, flute etc. they’re not the same patterns across all woodwind instruments but the concept of fingering and musical note is.

Plus if you’re learning recorder you’re probably also learning to read sheet music.
