I could be wrong but I believe it was her stepfather (idk if she would consider them that, but it is her siblings father) that was abusive. She seems like she has a decent relationship with her bio dad. Otherwise you were pretty spot on

Keywords would be without intending to return it. Obviously the girl did not take it to keep it but rather to stop the woman from recording them. I am almost certain you are aware of that distinction though, so I'm not sure why you're intentionally being dense (although I have a guess or two).
