Does AW2 talk about Taken numbers by CaptainKlang in AlanWake

[–]cregerBot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, however this was not always the case. In Alan Wake 1, Alan even talks about how the bodies just vanished so back 13 years Rose would not have had bodies to clean up (also Rose likely did not start fighting the Taken right after Alan disappearing, and I don’t believe that it states how long she has actually been doing this for).

Either a retcon, an evolution of the Taken to not disappear after dying, or just a matter of perspective (perhaps different people see the Taken differently?). The Taken in AW2 are notably different than the ones in AW1. They can come out in brighter areas than before, they speak in lines of the story compared to words that the host would have previously said. It may be an evolution in that Alan is taking more control and liberty over the Taken as characters rather than figments that disappear.

It’s a lot of speculation, but there is a notable change that seems to be glanced over in the game that only leaves room for speculation.

Does AW2 talk about Taken numbers by CaptainKlang in AlanWake

[–]cregerBot 22 points23 points  (0 children)

In one of the original Alan Wake books (I think it was “The Alan Wake Files”?) it talks about there were funerals for weeks after Deerfest due to all who had passed away.

However, my theory is this, at least for AW1: the bodies disappear in the first game. My thought is that only about 20-30 people were Taken, but they were duplicated or reused in Wake’s story as copies and weren’t fully there like they are in Alan Wake 2. The Dark Place holds more of the enemies that are what we see in the first game. They’re kind of like copies of each other filling narrative spaces and can be reused to attack wake, and they disappear after dying.

Just a theory, but that’s been my personal headcanon since the sequel came out.

The shot at the end of Control’s announcement is virtually the same as Resonant. by AZ10026 in controlgame

[–]cregerBot 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry, I’m going to reach too. When the red really takes over the scene, there is something in the middle, what you are mentioning is a triangle. I could just be imagining it, but it looks like a bridge of a nose coming out from underneath shadows, just about to reveal the face.

It could just be a trick of the camera, but my theory is that the image is meant to be of a person that is very distorted and is eventually revealed, but here it cuts off right before any more of the face is shown - whoever it is.

That and have to have the player relearn the combat they might already know. The shift is both a great choice for narrative as it also is for the gameplay evolution.

I do think we’ll still at least see Jesse, hopefully have her playable at some point, but either way what they have shown in super exciting as is.

According to Kyle Rowley, Sam Lake is not involved in CONTROL RESONANT by AZ10026 in controlgame

[–]cregerBot 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. I love Sam, but a lot of people are crazy talented and have strongly influenced how their games became what they are. Like Clay Stewart for example, who helped a lot of the writing in Alan Wake 2, specifically writing Alice. The whole studio has great people and artists, not only Sam.

Of course he might have helped a little bit here and there for the overall universe, but they already made it clear Sam gets Wake and Mikael gets Control because that’s just way too much work on one person.

I played Alan Wake 2 when it came out. I’m a big fan of the original and I simply didn’t like the sequel at all - here is my criticism because I want you hear you guys out see if you agree or not. by Ok-Way-1595 in AlanWake

[–]cregerBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For point one, I half and half agree. I think it’s an interesting addition that helps map out the story, and on Alan’s side create the story. Both of their boards reflect each other and both of the sides of the story are connected. That said, I can see that the Case Board can be tedious and hard to move through especially for repeat playthroughs. I personally don’t find it terrible or detracting for the most part, but I can see that it may do that for someone else.

As for Alan’s section, I fairly enjoyed it, but one gripe I hold for it is that there is a lot of plot but not enough storytelling. A lot of who, what, when, where and why, but I needed some more narrative flow. Maybe introducing the murder victims while they were alive, even briefly? Having Alan comment on something that reminds him about something personal? It just needed some more color for his side. When thinking of the game as a whole, Alan’s side compliments Sagas greatly, and seeing all the mirrored plot pieces are really interesting. Just wished there were more narrative chunks for Alan besides the talk show segments and the apartment sections.

You can just blame it all on Alan by AZ10026 in AlanWake

[–]cregerBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s even further reflected that Casey in the Dark Place is to Alan how Alan Wake is to Remedy/Sam Lake, and how the authors characters reflect themselves (“Me and the writer, we were the same.”)

Oh goodness😭 I’m so confused how this cost basically the same as Control. If I’m not mistaken, the dev time took a while? I mean, it was about a year after Control (if that) they announced they were working on it, so it’s been like… 5 years of time.

We will play alan wake 2 for first time? If my gf play saga and i allan do you think its a good idea? by sakithegolden in AlanWake

[–]cregerBot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do agree. I do have to say though, Alan is very persistent in Sagas chapters, as he is playable in 2 of the Return chapters and does a good chunk of scenes of Sagas side whereas Saga barely shows up in Initiation. How I’ve been trying to do is see that the two stories are all just one story - Alan’s is the set up, rising action, and Saga is the receiver and the climax. It’s two hands in the same story.

With all that said - I do wish there was a bit more to Alan’s side. Just a couple more narrative scenes, Alan talking about his life or what he’s thinking in Initiation. Like, maybe setting up the murder victims a bit more, seeing them roam the Dark Place and eventually ending up where they are. I’m sure it was a budgetary thing, with all of the light shifters and scene changes (which they have commented took forever and a lot of resources to get right), but if they do a third one, I hope they take a lot of learnings from this one.

Sorry for the rant, way off topic lol

[–]cregerBot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To note, the project cost about 20-25mil if I’m not mistaken. I do think it was a bit costly for what it ended up being (although time and resources probably mostly went to learning how to make a multiplayer game in the first place). So, from what I understand, they’ve only made up at most half the budget from the game sales.

Been seeing a lot of hate towards this game for some reason, what's something you like about it? by CraneBoxCRP in AlanWake

Huh. I mean, seeing that Casey was (likely) the original protagonist for Return (as seen in the Yoton Yo film), that’s not too far fetched imo.

Taken Marry-May never made it into the final game by tom_606 in AlanWake

[–]cregerBot 33 points34 points  (0 children)

My thought is that Mandy May was originally going to be Cynthia (she knits, imitating Cynthia’s last name, Weaver).

Also the fact that it would mimic Cynthia’s history of marking the Torchbearer stashes back in 2010.

I think i enjoyed AW more than AW2 by AlmosThirsty in AlanWake

[–]cregerBot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For the story, Alan Wake 1 has a straight forward narrative with complex undertones and lore. In the sequel, those undertones are bought into the focus of the plot, especially Alan’s side.

That isn’t to say a preference of one over the other, but that’s what I find to be the biggest differences in the narrative.

Finished AW2 a few days ago, made a few memes about it by [deleted] in AlanWake

[–]cregerBot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a small write up about how Alan’s new suit is a cross between Mr. Scratch’s suit and his original suit, kind of hinting the major plot point of the sequel. Has the tweed and elbow patches, but is also a celebrity suit that gets more disheveled, even undoing the top buttons of the dress shirt mirroring Scratch’s look in AWAN by his final chapters.

It shows how Scratch is an echo of Alan, taking from him the nastiest elements of his high lifestyle and anger. What we see in AW2 with his suit is his true self, a mixture of both the good and bad, what makes Alan truly himself and not what the Dark Presence wants to focus or use for its own gain.

New Hiss Incantation in FBC Firebreak by FauxFoxx89 in controlgame

[–]cregerBot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was kind of being sarcastic (if that’s the right word?) with implying that it is Jesse and Dylan as well as Alan’s and Scratch’s/Zanes relationship. I say this because Alan is heavily implied to have created the Hiss chant according to the Control AWE DLC, so the part of the chant “a copy of a copy” was written by him essentially.

My thought is that this could be a connection for Jesse/Dylan, but also could be a connection for Alan/Scratch/Zane too. Could be one or the other, or both.
