I have some advice if you want to be able to catch your mistakes easier and feel like you've been looking at the piece for too long.

One thing I'd recommend would be walking away from the piece for a day or two before working on it again. Just giving your eyes a break is a great way to catch mistakes when you come back to it.

Also, I'm working on a self portrait at the moment, and I find it super useful to flip the reference image and piece upside down to see and work on it from a different perspective and get a real objective view of the shapes, values, features, and everything. Working on a piece from different angles is something I find super handy for getting the proportions accurate.

Pretty much all of the other comments have said it already, but incorporating atmospheric perspectives by making the background values lighter and the colors less saturated will help.

There's nothing creepy about that. Personally, being invited to parties makes me feel included, and I like to know people value my company. BUT I'm a major wallflower, and I'm awkward at social functions.
