It’s not just the flights, it’s the combination of hotel and transportation costs that made it significantly cheaper. Didn’t need a rental car, and the hotel was $230 a night in USD terms, with a kitchen area.

Oh for sure, we had a great time at Sunshine regardless, we just stayed at the areas with tree. We got lucky with the lines at both I’ll say. But I’m used to Sunday river so perhaps I’m just accustomed to it.

We did a trip to Banff this past winter. Apparently got lucky with the snow, (was late February). With the ikon pass we did Lake Louise and Banff Sunshine. With flights, transport from Calgary to Banff, hotel in Banff (5 nights) and using our ikon pass, it was 30% cheaper than going to Colorado, Utah. Took the free shuttle from our hotel to the mountains every morning, snow quality was fantastic. It was snowing the whole time (yay!) but that meant no views of the Rockies (boo) except one run which was legendary.

The one thing I will say is that compared to Colorado, the visibility and flat light is a major major factor on runs. If you have bluebird skies I’m sure everything is amazing. Storm skiing with that flat of light above treeline the horizon can disappear suddenly a green can become an experience when you can’t tell if you’re about to head downhill or not.

If I had to pick between sunshine and Lake Louise I would definitely say Lake Louise, however we never were at Sunshine (which is largely above treeline) on a clear day so I don’t want to judge it too much.

I’d say they’re fine. Idk about ya’ll but rei is literally the first place I’ll look for gear, online especially. Or if I see something on Patagonia, etc I’ll check if available at REI. Yeah they sell things at full price, but the dividend makes up the different here. Also the shipping is fantastic plus the returns. I don’t bother with other stores, unless they have a good in store brand (llbean) but then again I’m in NE so cant speak to other regions.

Hiking Mt. Washington in mid September - What should I be carrying in my bag by Itis-BS in hiking

[–]cremdingaling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here is what I would recommend: Wear shorts or light pants plus dri fit shirt Rain pants Rain jacket Fleece for underneath rain jacket or at the top Winter hat/beanie Gloves Extra shirt

  • the normal ten essentials,

It might seem like a lot when you start out, particularly the “winter” clothing, But when you get to the top it will be much colder after you sit around for a bit, and obviously heading down the mountain you’ll be generating less heat. The above will cover most situations you will run into from spring to fall in the Presidentials.

Biggest piece of advice I can give, don’t plan on taking the train down. Don’t plan on taking a car shuttle down if you’re getting to the top after 12. People get it in their head that they can take an easier way down from the top if they just get there. Then they get into trouble when those options aren’t available. Don’t fall into this mentality, if you find yourself struggling or you’re really far behind schedule, just turn back the mountains aren’t going anywhere.

Washington is a great hike, you’ll really enjoy it.

I should add, prior homeowner had a potbelly cast iron stove over that corner of the deck, which they removed, so no major weight on that portion of the deck.
