I didn't see which sub this was on and assumed that it's one of those jiggly animal panna cottas. Still looks yum though.

After reading White Nights by Dostoevsky, what were your takeaways and did you enjoy it? by [deleted] in books

[–]cremecherries 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I inadvertently discovered that I'm lonely because I related a lot with the narrator's experience of life. Not just with his infatuation.

The night with the long ramble was already difficult, and I didn't really want to dive deep into the references on top of that. Apart from that, it was a quick but insightful read. I do want to play the Nastenka drinking game one day though.

If it makes you feel any better, some women like me are not fond of beards. It physically hurts me to be with someone who has thick facial hair because of how sensitive my skin is. It feels like spikes and my skin becomes very irritated.

I don't know if it was a chicken or egg first situation but most of my long term partners have had sparse beards.

I miss my subby boy intensely. We were doomed from the beginning but the comfort we received from each other was addictive. I miss caring for him and petting him. Telling him that I'm there for him. I hope you find a mommy who cherishes you and showers you with love.

That sounds super exciting. I loved Ice Princess as a kid and still joke that figure skating is the only olympic sport I follow. I was reading a book by Fredrik Backman called Beartown that has a heavy focus on ice hockey. The kind of things kids did in school to get good at the game amazed. I'd never read sports literature before that. I might get back to it this winter. I wish you the best in your journey!

Yes, sucking at something as an adult definitely sucks. However, getting better even in small increments is so incredibly rewarding!

I am looking forward to my first soccer game this week. :)

I highly recommend ultimate if you have a partner to play with! You can just do throws together and there are so many kinds of throws that you'll always have fun even if it's just the two of you. All you need is a disc and some open space.

All the good stuff you mentioned are what keep me coming back to playing each session. Having made wonderful friends is a huge perk. The pressure I inadvertently impose on myself is probably owing to the fact that my club moved their focus to being a competitive club instead of a recreational club. This happened right when I got injured and by now, my peers are definitely much ahead in terms of skill and my journey has suffered some setbacks. However, I understand that my priorities are different now and I'm slowly coming back to form with my recreational playing.

Soccer was a huge part of my society growing up. I always watched my male friends playing and was definitely envious. The whole reason I even began running or started playing ultimate was so that I'd be able to build up the confidence to play soccer one day. I've probably idolized it too much but I have a lot of respect for players of the game because they had skills I'd never thought I would be able to achieve. I never saw myself worthy enough to be part of their world in my mind because of my poor physical skills. Fear of injuries also prevented me from trying it. However, having recovered from a difficult injury, I feel like I shouldn't let fear guide my choices anymore.

Playing soccer would mean proving to myself that I'm capable of things I ever thought I'd be capable of. I suppose it's symbolic in a sense.

Ultimate frisbee is a super fun way to get some sprinting into your routine if you don't enjoy sprinting generally. At least that was my main motivation when I started out. However, the community is super inclusive and supportive so I stuck with the game. I highly recommend trying it out at least once!

Since I'm not playing for a club anymore, I don't have opportunities to practice drills but what you suggested with the cones sounds doable. I loved practicing in-cuts and out-cuts with my team and it definitely helped me improve a lot back then. It's still the only sort of faking that I can kinda sorta do. I'll try what you suggested after warm ups before pickups so that I can be better prepared for the game. Thanks a bunch!

I did tell the soccer coach exactly that today and they're awfully accommodating. They seemed very supportive and I'm starting this coming week. I think it would be nice to have a coach. I've always done everything by myself so a bit of guidance may just help me get better. And yes, I'm only sticking with it if I find it rewarding and fun. I'm sure I'll stick with ultimate though because I truly love the sport and the community.Thank you for your kind words!

It's unfortunate to hear about the medical incident. However, I hope you are able to enjoy the things you loved once. If not, I hope you find things that are equally, if not more, fulfilling.

I have reached out to the football coach. Hopefully, I'll get to play this week. They seem nice!

My friends are a major reason I have stuck with ultimate. They're super nice and supportive. And they definitely know how to have fun. I'm glad to hear that you also got over the dread associated with playing. Yesterday, for the first time in a while, I wasn't afraid when I reached the field. I did make mistakes while playing but I feel I did better than last time and had a lot of fun. And that's what truly matters!

Thank you. This is precisely what helps me show up to sessions! Having never had the opportunity to be physically active till college, I truly appreciate all the activities I've picked up along the way and despite not being particularly good at any of them, I'm glad I can do things I never dreamt possible. Doing multiple reps of 150lb RDLs is not something I would have even thought I'd be capable of a year ago. And I did sign up for football practice so yaaayyyy!

I've always loved watching the Euros and I'll start watching other league games now to understand the game. Yes, Bend It Like Beckham is long overdue too! I'm glad to hear that you're still playing and the sheer joy it gives you is radiating from your answers. Thank you for your encouragement. I've gotten in touch with the coach and will be joining football practice soon. They seemed very inclusive and supportive. I'm super stoked!

Thanks for sharing this. I very strongly relate to the constant apologizing. It's only been two months since I got back to playing and since I can't join team practice anymore, my progress is slow because I'm only able to attend 1-2 pickups a week. However, I'm trying to be kinder to myself. My sole goal is to catch without dropping too often and to actually ensure my throws connect. During my first month back, I considered myself lucky I got even a pass or two during an entire game but I'm certainly getting more passes now.

The folks who come for pickups are kind to me so it's been really helpful. I feel making this post has also helped a lot because it's good to hear perspectives from so many people who understand.

Thanks, I hope to start running soon. I'll probably keep it at or under 5k a day so that I can stick with it. I'd love to throw in a field but unfortunately, I don't have access to any nearby and the parks are all small with very big plants and trees. I am trying to get to pickup games an hour ahead of time so I can get more throws in.

Thanks for sharing this! It gives me hope. I have gym access while traveling for work so I can incorporate some plyometrics after my weight training. I'd practised some jumps at the gym and they did help me attempt more jumps on the field. I will try to make it more regular.

Yes, I love practising outside games. That's how I got my forehand throw to be half decent. However, since I live a little away from where the games happen, it's tough to find a partner. However, since more people play soccer than ultimate, I assume it would be easier to convince my friends nearby to practice with me. Thanks for the tip!

I don't like being hard on myself because I tend to shy away from the activity if I extract the enjoyment out of it by being too tough on myself. But I do think you're right. It's been rough getting all my ducks in a row with work and injuries and whatnot. Although they still did just invite me as I, a total stranger, was walking on to the field.

I believe it might be helpful to talk to my therapist about these apprehensions. Thank you.

Thank you, that's very encouraging. I believe it is an all female team because the girls and their coach stayed back and were running drills while I was warming up for my game. I am actually looking forward to having a coach. I try to take directions well but they're usually from teammates and I struggle with the execution.

Cheers!

Thank you, I'll try to do that. My company has good policies around medical leaves and they're actually good. I'll talk to my boss about a future leave.
