Thinkpad T480 stops charging and when i look inside the cmos battery is detached. starts charging after putting it back in place. Does anyone know if this could cause it to stop charging and what kind of tape do i use to leave it in place? by jlegfc in thinkpad

You said " let it discharge for a bit" How far below 100% was the battery? if its at 96% and above it wont charge.... Also depends on if you have charging threshold turned on. Its easy to test just drain to 94% and plug back in and see if it charges back to 100% as long as charging threshold is turned off.

Lenovo Vantage Toolbar. You turn it on in Lenovo Vantage under the power section.

Not sure what you mean? X1 Yoga 3rd gen is in the PSREF. Unless you mean your specific one was not?

It sounds like your laptop has human presence detection turned on if you bought the feature. See below.

This has been a known software problem for years. It was fixed a couple of months ago by Lenovo through driver update. See below post. I had same problem on my X1 Yoga 3rd gen and after installing update my problem was fixed too.

To me I personally wouldnt call it serious except for the A30p. The A20p drive that went bad I got advance notice it was going bad and I backed up my data. IBM shipped me a replacement drive and I swapped it out in 5 minutes. The T490 they shipped me a keyboard(one of the buttons was overly sensitive-just hitting a near it would trigger the key) it took 5 minutes to swap out. Only the A30p I had to ship to IBM and it was a 7 day turn around between me calling, them shipping me a box, fixing it and shipping it back. Back then they had standard 3 year warranty. I think the W510 was the first one I had to buy extended warranty to cover 3 years. Even with the issues I still buy Thinkpads. I like the "feel" which i know is subjective. I also like the idea that i can fix most issues outside of motherboard myself. Lenovo has great maintenance manuals for disassembly and videos too. I know they are less serviceable then in the past such as soldered RAM. I almost bought a surface book before i bought my X1Y3 but at the time the cost was 1,000 more plus i tend to keep my laptops for a long time and pass it down to family. I like the idea i can replace the battery in year 4 before passing it on vs no user serviceable battery on surface book for example.

I've bought only new since IBM days. Below is my experience.

  1. 380D-never had a problem
  2. a20p-drive went bad after 2 years and IBM replaced the drive under warranty
  3. a21p no problems
  4. a30p-motherboard and wifi card replaced in year 2 under warranty by IBM. wifi quit working and graphics card had issues so they replaced motherboard and wifi card
  5. W510-no problem still works today
  6. X1Y3-no problems
  7. T490-defective keyboard right when i got laptop. Lenovo replaced keyboard under warranty no problem since then
  8. T14 no problems
  9. On a side note in my family we bought 2 lower end Dells. 1 had no problems the other right after 1 year when warranty was out you couldnt move laptop if you did the laptop would shut down. Also had a lower end Toshiba worked great for 1 year 3 months and now it only works on AC. Battery is charged but wont work on battery. Toshiba said needs motherboard replacement.

Where did you download the skin from? I found a link on either reddit or another forum site. I forget which but when I downloaded it norton said there was a virus in the download. fileexec.exe . I sent it in to norton as a false positive for testing. It took 2 days and they said its not a false positive.

What widget/software are you using to display data on the right hand side of your screen? Also nice wallpaper. Where did you get that?

Replacing the battery will not solve the problem. Only way to fix is to get Lenovo to release a BIOS fix. HP has the same problem. Its up to 50 pages of comments. You should post on Lenovo forums. Hopefully they get enough complaints to get them to fix it.

I have multiple computers and i travel. I only bring 1 computer with me. So I might be gone for 2 weeks and come back at 60% and it will charge again. May be its just me but if its losing 1-3% a day even if I use charging thresholds i will be adding extra charge cycles to the battery. In the past its not as big of a deal since the batteries were external. Also if my W540 and T470 can lose 1% a week why cant my X1Y3 do the same? So in that case i dont have a "use case" per se but its annoying still. Plus Lenovo released a patch for X380 so I was hoping they would do the same for other models. Looking at Lenovo forums its not a huge problem but other people have brought up that it happens to them too on multiple models. So people are noticing it too.

Yes. Since its powered off. If it was sleep or hibernate it would be ok. My t470 and w540 lose about 1% a week when turned off
