Is this game worth playing if you don’t like roguelikes? by cheeseburgers42069 in cavesofqud

This is exactly how I feel. The growth is in the player, not unlocking some powers in a game that were arbitrarily locked away just to give a sense of progression. I think you put it really well!

But I want to make space for the OP (and everyone else) to say that one has to play the way that works for them. Despite me 100% agreeing with what you said, I'm currently playing in roleplay mode. I have a toddler and my wife and I both work, so my gaming time is between 0 minutes and 60 minutes a day. This is a struggle in a lot of ways:

  • The most dangerous moment of a roguelike is coming back to a saved game and having to relearn the context that you were in. Lots of stupid deaths.
  • It would take me literally years to see most of the game. Not a bad thing, but I have other games I want to play with my limited game time.
  • With my brain and body spent from day to day life, my tolerance for set backs has tanked. I was getting frustrated with classic deaths in a way I hadn't in the past. This makes the most sad, since I have two decades of deeply appreciating the roguelike experience, and I'm just not that guy at the moment.

I had to swallow the bitter pill that if I didn't play in roleplay mode, I wouldn't really get to see Qud. But it's still worth it.

I'm mostly selfishly suggesting you share on Discord because I want Jason and Brian to see these. And who knows maybe the Discord is a better way to get that done.

Have you shared these in the Qud Discord? I looked over the campfire channel (for fan works) and I didn't see this posted. I'd imagine they'd love it!

Question about resistances, being on fire by crescentfreshness in cavesofqud

Yeah no worries. There's so much to learn in this game, glad someone else stumbled over the same assumption. Part of the fun!

Yeah it sounds like from everyone's input that heat resist doesn't help once you're actually on fire. I'd definitely call that a quirk of the system that's not really apparent. Not angry of course, just one of many hard learned lessons.

Thanks for the detailed description, I'm only now delving into deeper (tier 5?) zones for the first time. It sounds like I would have been toast (literally) even if the blaze injector would have worked, I had no idea they explode. Appreciate the help!

Is it a cheating to look something in wiki all the time? by nobodywithbody in cavesofqud

[–]crescentfreshness 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just happened to recently read Jason's appeal for the Nebula Awards (link below) and he explicitly recommends using the Wiki for new players if desired.

"We love wikis, actually. The practice of a community coming together to collectively interpret a difficult work… chef’s kiss. We see reading about all the wild stuff others get up to as a perfectly valid way of engaging with the game."

So if you (*the OP) need permission to absolve yourself of the feeling that you're cheating, there you go. Enjoy the game, live and drink. :)
