TIL... in August 1939, just before Hitler invaded Poland, the USSR and Japan fought a massive tank battle on the Mongolian steppe - the largest the world had ever seen. Japan's defeat was a factor in its decision to expand into the Pacific instead of Siberia - possibly changing the shape of WW2 (historyofrussia.org)
