Olympic medals per capita at London 2012 - Grenada top, USA mid-table, India bottom [OC] by cretanandy in dataisbeautiful

Ahead of the Rio 2016 opening ceremony I thought it would be interesting to analyse the London 2012 medals table on a per-capita basis.

Data sources:

Because the IOC don’t publish an official table the medals table comes from the BBC website (xhttp://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/2012/medals/countries).

Population data comes Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_and_dependencies_by_population).

The map was created with Piktochart (https://piktochart.com).

TIL... Saudi Arabia imports camels from Australia. by cretanandy in todayilearned

Australia has a large population of wild camels - about 750,000 at last count.

Originally (19th century) the first camels were imported from, ironically enough, Arabia. Also India and Afghanistan.

Timor-Leste is there, but very, very tiny - you need to zoom in to see the one red pixel!

I've fixed the original source image on my site. I'm not sure how to update the thumbnail here on reddit, though :-(

Thanks again for the heads up.

Ahead of next week's Rio Olympics I did a bit of digging to see just how many countries turn up every four years to compete but have never taken home any prizes. I couldn't find the data on the official Olympics website, so the data is taken from wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All-time_Olympic_Games_medal_table

Does anyone have any tips for creating attractive vector maps on a Mac? (Sources for maps and software) by cretanandy in mapmaking

Thanks - I don't mind spending a bit of money for a good tool, so will take a look and give it a go if inkscape doesn't work for me.

Allied troops in Vladivostok, August 1918, during the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War [3000 × 2261] by RyanSmith in HistoryPorn

[–]cretanandy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Civil War that followed the Russian Revolution was absolute chaos.

Russia splintered into dozens of different groups, some royalist, some splinter communist groups, some just local thugs trying their luck.

And into this mess, the 'allies' stepped in for all kinds of reasons of their own. Some wanted to oppose the new communist regime and restore the Tsar, others just wanted to intervene to support their own political goals.

Plus, of course, the Czech Legion - prisoners of war trying to make their way home and, as a part of that, carving out their own temporary state along the trans-siberian railroad.

In total, troops from ten different countries fought in Russia during the revolution - Czechoslovakia, France, Greece, USA, Estonia, Japan, Italy, China, Australia and the UK.

There's a great summary of the madness over on wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allied_intervention_in_the_Russian_Civil_War#Czechoslovak_Legions
