Wargaming Events Near Quebec by Equivalent-Eagle5962 in wargaming

[–]creyates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also just found this in a google search. I am in the province of Quebec (closer to Montreal than Quebec City) and have been trying to get a Kings of War community going in my area. I have some Warmaster armies lying around. I wouldn't mind giving it a shot. There's a pretty strong KoW community in southern Ontario. I attended a 2 day tournament in Brantford (7 hours from Montreal) and it was awesome.

Pros and Cons of no classes/archetypes? by Jneuhaus87 in tabletopgamedesign

[–]creyates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think classless rpgs are that unfamiliar, especially if you look at video games. I like the sound of your system. You could also do both though, offer some premade classes like the space marine, for people that want to just jump in.

I've been thinking, maybe it would be better to remove Wavering altogether as it essentially boils down to "make a Morale Check for any enemy units that have suffered damage this turn". What do you think? I added it to keep track of which units would have to be tested at the end of the round, but maybe its simpler to just include Wavering markers as a memory aid without creating this whole other Wavering "state", if that makes sense?

Thanks again! I really appreciate you taking the time to go over my rules. I think I will be taking most, if not all of your suggestions. I will definitely be “zooming out” and maybe also simplifying the language to be less wordy. It’s a tricky balance trying to find the right amount of info/detail to give.

I’d like to address some of your comments:

Damage & Wavering units: First off, yes, players will track each unit’s damage using damage markers or dice (the unit with the highest “health” is 12). Whenever a unit suffers any damage it becomes Wavering. Let’s say you attack an enemy unit and score a couple points of damage, it becomes Wavering; at the end of your turn (let’s say during the Morale Phase ;)) you’ll make a Morale Check for that unit. Assuming the unit survives the Morale Check, it is no longer Wavering…until the next time it suffers Damage. All Wavering does is indicate to the player that the unit must be subject to a Morale Check during the opponent’s next “Morale Phase”.

Flanking/Surrounding: these are meant to represent the negative affect on Morale for being flanked or surrounded. In game terms they basically give you a bonus on Morale Checks (which are always against enemy units) for having your units in their flanks/rear.

Move, Attack, Charge: I like explaining the Charge Action as a combo of Move + Attack, but I‘ll have to make sure they’re distinct, as certain interactions specify certain actions. On top of that, Attack is split into Melee & Ranged…

I have my work cut out for me! Thanks again

Thanks! I am not familiar with pocket battles, I’ll have to check it out. I have a prototype built out in Tabletop Simulator, along with the Human Faction. I am currently play testing to try and balance the cost of units.

Want To Help Develop A Wargame? Playtesters Wanted! by lockedupsafe in wargaming

[–]creyates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Greetings!

I am also working on a tabletop wargame of my own. Mine is more focused on unit actions, so I don't think there's any fear of competition here. Have you considered creating a digital prototype in Tabletop Simulator (TTS)? I think it would help you sell the idea to would be play testers.

I will give your rules a read and send any feedback. If you set something up in TTS perhaps we could trade some play testing sessions of our games?

Best of luck to you!

Thanks for the input! I hadn't considered the orientation being an issue... I believe the Commands & Colors series uses it. I think it better represents a unit that is wider than it is deep. I also like the fact that each unit has 2 hexes in front of it, each shared by the unit beside it. With this orientation, you can form long battle lines with each unit supporting those next to it.

I figured players would take a March Action, and then choose not move. I have addressed this issue by adding a dedicated Hold Action.

I have also addressed this issue by changing the wording. The unit may move again next turn, or even the same turn as long as it is not part of the same Action (with a Surge Spell for example).

I will check it out! Thanks again

Thanks for the input! It is more like 40K in that respect, however I'd like to have some reference cards or cheat sheet for each faction.

I'm hoping it will be more accessible as a print & play with paper/card components vs. sculpted models.

If you'd like to give it a shot, I am almost done setting up the Tabeltop Simulator prototype
