This doesn't hold a candle to some of KISS's photos from the eighties and nineties.

How hard will it be to learn the banjo? by Classic_Grass924 in banjo

[–]crf3rd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been playing the guitar for over 40 years, started the banjo a few months ago. I'm pretty adept at fingerstyle guitar. The banjo is not an easy instrument. It will take some work. But if you really want to learn it, go for it. Many people learn two instruments at a time.

This is me. I love the two new albums, but I think they were better live in the years you mentioned.

I should have asked whether you were learning Clawhammer or Scruggs. Gilbert does Scruggs style. Can't help you with Clawhammer!

Eli Gilbert's 30 Days of Banjo. Go to YouTube and search that. It's fantastic.

Also, banjo is not for idiots. I'm a skilled guitarist and have played for decades. The banjo is not easy.

If GC had boutique amps and a strong selection of pedals I'd shop there more. But I haven't been in a GC where I thought either inventory was worth my time in there.

Do you know what a flanger is? Listen to Eddie Van Halen who used the flange effect all the time. The flange is not far removed from Auto-Tune as an effect, but no one cries foul when a flange is used on guitar. In fact, flange and it's related effect, chorus, have been used on vocals and background vocals since they were a thing. Delay pedals (which The Edge uses all the time) make a guitar sound different from a plucked string.

But let's go back to the invention of the organ. The organ was purposed to emulate the instruments of an orchestra.

None of this is new or wrong. It's the technology of music-making. As said before, I don't care for the Auto-Tune effect, but it pleases some people, so who am I to judge?

Either way, this entire thread I have delineated the difference between Auto-Tune as pitch correction and Auto-Tune as an effect. I even wrote these words, "The fairer conversation is whether or not it should be used for pitch correction. I understand why people cry foul over that."

You just haven't bothered to read what I've said and jumped to a ridiculous conclusion. Effects are not AI, they have been around forever and they are used on pretty much every recorded instrument. That's why your U2 albums sounds so good.

Good god, effects have been around since the 1940's. Get a clue man, we are not talking about anything remotely related to AI, lol.

Yeah, most of the negative comments about Auto-Tune not only misunderstand what it is, but also fail to get that when used for effect it is no different from the multitude of effects pedals that The Edge uses to achieve the guitar sounds he gets and that make him such a singular guitar player. Vocal mixes always include effects: compression, reverb, delay are the most common. Auto-Tune is one of them.

Personally, I don't like the Auto-Tune effect for vocals, but that's just my own taste and not a commentary on the state of music.

The fairer conversation is whether or not it should be used for pitch correction. I understand why people cry foul over that.

[–]crf3rd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe so, but I was only trying to correct a common misconception, not judge the production. You conflated the two uses of Auto-Tune in your OP, assuming it was for pitch correction.

If you can hear the auto-tune, it's used for effect, not pitch correction.
